Is Hendon the Heisman favorite?

History tells us he needs to beat UGA and win the SEC championship to overcome the ESPN and Big10 bias. Even that might not be enough. Stroud has been a front runner and media darling since preseason. He hasn't done anything yet to lose it in their eyes.

25 TDs halfway through the season is pretty great, IMO, in any conference. If he finishes with 50 TDs on the season that would put him in the top 10 all-time. If they are also a playoff team, it’d be hard for anyone to not vote for him.

Hendon though has an opportunity to something even more special. If he wins a championship with this team it would be the greatest over-achievement since....?
See that’s the thing if you can just rack up stats against nobodies on your way to the award then who gives a F about it? Hooker threw up silly stats against Bama.

Should be. Reminder... the 1997 Heisman winner played in the Big 10 where he got support from the frostbite media and several former winners with bias against the SEC. Second place was Manning.

Deserving it and getting it are universes apart. Stroud will win it unless he somehow has a really bad game... which is doubtful considering his competition and the talent around him.
Back then the Big Ten had a contract with ESPN and the SEC had no affiliation. It’s different now and you have even the SEC Network, which is partnered with ESPN. Remember Spencer Riley walking around with a CBS hat and we were there darling? Screw CBS now with Vern (who wiped Tebow’s dirty butt for him), Gary (maybe even worse)… Nesslar is the only redeeming quality they have now.

Times change. That’s not to say ESPN loves us, but they aren’t going to actively campaign for a player for a conference aligned with Fox.

His game against Bama may be the best game by a quarterback I’ve ever seen. Ice water in his veins. Clutch throw after clutch throw.

Hooker 7th in the country in total offense.
Hooker is the only player in the top 15 who’s team is ranked in the top 10.

350.7 yards per game, on 38 plays per game. Every other player in the top 15 has more plays per game.

Hooker is 2nd in passing efficiency

Hooker is 13th in passing yards per game. He also has 61 less attempts and 43 fewer completions than any power 5 player ahead of him.

If Hooker had the 2rd fewest attempts and completions (rather than the fewest) he would lead the nation in yards per game with 415 yards per game…….the next closest would be Penix JR of Washington with 365. Penix would have 194 completions vs Hookers 162.

Hookers passing stats are seriously freakish! If he threw the ball as much as most of these guys do he would have record numbers…….. however he doesn’t have to and his numbers are still extremely good.

If I had a vote I’d still give it to Stroud. Just look at his stats. But if Hendon follows this up with a win against UGA there’s no way he doesn’t win it
What’s stats are you talking about? He does have more passing TDs but he also has more interceptions. Hooker also has about 300 rushing yards and 3 TDs while Stroud has no impact in the running game. Other than that the stats look pretty even at a glance and Hooker has played a far tougher schedule.

I would say Hooker is 2nd right now.

However Hooker has more opportunities for Heisman moments.

Hooker had the Bama game, he has the Georgia game and the possibility of the SEC championship game.

Stroud really only has the Michigan game for his “moment.”

Wait, you're rating Hooker second behind a guy who MIGHT have a big day eventually right after Hooker does have a big day?

Tennessee has had multiple runner ups.

Majors
Shuler
Manning

I don't see that changing, even if Hooker puts up video game like numbers. Stroud will get a late season push from the media and if his game against Michigan is even average, with a win against them, it's his.

Take off your tinfoil hat

Huh?

Where did you get that from my post?
The thread “is Hendon the Heisman favorite?”

I said he is “probably” 2nd……nothing to do with my personal opinion of where he belongs.

Then I stated Hooker has more opportunities to improve his standing or woo the voters.

HH is on pace for:

Over 3600 passing yards
Almost 600 yards rushing
36 total touchdowns
2 int

No doubt HH should win the heisman with an undefeated or 1 loss season.

Woodson won it in 1997 for a couple of plays he made in big games.

You said Hooker is second behind Stroud who can have a Heisman moment in the Michigan game which hasn't happened yet. To this point. Stroud has done nothing I've seen to put him over Hooker. Hooker just took down Bama and has a phenomenal stats so far. I'm confused as to how you could place him behind Stroud with the assumption that Stroud will eventually beat out UM.

Don’t forget to add Heupel to that list… we’re made for each other!

If Hendon Hooker wants the award, I really hope he has a chance to earn it. I also get the prestige and recognition that comes with it for the University, so I know it would never happen, but just imagine if he told the Heisman committee "Thanks but no thanks. After the sham voting against Majors and Manning, that award is meaningless for Tennessee players and fans." That would forever engrave his name in Tennessee lore.

You need a history lesson. In addition to almost every list out there has Stroud as their favorite. Hooker is a long shot.

I know my history. Expecting a mysterious Big 10 bump (in a year when ESPN has basically cut ALL ties with the Big 10) because of something that happened 25 years ago is absolutely ridiculous.

It would. As the dumbest decision ever made...

I didn't say ESPN. I referred to the media as a whole. The award has it's biased regions and has for decades.
