Is Huepel bad at recruiting?

I mean, the narrative that the staff can't close is born out of an offseason of the following:

Without including guys like Ryan Wingo or Elijah Rushing... the Vols have been in the drivers seat for or top two for a good bit of the following recruitments:

Kam Mikell
Cai Bates (twice)
Roger Salapogostick
Amari Jefferson
Braylon Russell
Chris Cole
Kamryn Fountain
Danny Okoye
Jordan Seaton

Couldn't get Elias Williams to flip from Mizzou - which has significantly worse facilities and is significantly farther from his home than we are.
Couldn't get Michael Smith to visit, despite the gaping hole in our depth chart at his position and his high school QB being committed here.
Couldn't get Amaris Williams to visit.

These are all kids that the staff put on the full court press - they were all prioritized and the red carpet was rolled out.

And that's just off the top of my head. I'm sure there are names or recruitments I'm forgetting. Like Reddell or Nwerni or that tight end who committed to Florida (jackson?)

Obviously these are big boy battles and you can't win them all.. but we've finished second fiddle and failed to close out a ton.

Hence the staff can't close concern.

Of course, this will fall on depth ears to the Everything is Awesome crowd!

Think about this too. This staff has yet to recruit a high school recruit that has started at OT, TE, or CB on game 1 roster. Our best DT (Lott), CB, WR (Bru), LT, RT, LG, and arguably LB were all transfers. That’s why it should piss you off to see what Ole Miss is doing. We are in the same boat as them, middle of the pack SEC team that can’t out recruit the big SEC dogs year in and year out. What then can you do to compete regularly at a high level? You sign the best players you possibly can out of high school, especially at QB, OL, DL, LB, and CB, and then you spend as much money as possible to get big name transfer guys. That’s the recipe to give you the best shot year in and year out (outside having a NFL talent at QB like Hooker). Right now, we aren’t doing that at a very high level.

I think the portal should be used like NFL free agency - to supplement. If you’re one or two big time players away, go spend that money in the portal to land the best available.

Otherwise - I’d say use the NIL to reward the guys in your program.

I think ole miss is doing what they’re doing because they can’t regularly recruit at an elite level to land top five classes like the CFB elite.

Tennessee has the facilities and tradition and geographical footprint where they should not be limited as much as ole miss is. Hell if Ohio Stste can be top 5 every year - we sure as hell can be.

Unfortunately we’re not. Were not even top 5 in the SEC. And that’s concerning.

We get deep in it with a lot of big fish but can’t seem to close it out.

I hate all those depth ears. But then, you also have to hate shallow talk, so...

Right we didn't sign any good players or win a recruiting battle, now you feel better? Bet you're welcomed to all the tailgate pregame get togethers.

Coach might not be a guy who will throw a half Nelson on a recruit and take him to the mat, but he is the kind of coach who creates the best environment in college football for the best players in the country. Some get that. Some don't.
