Is Huepel bad at recruiting?

The same people in here complaining that we don’t take enough guys to move up in the rankings are the same people complaining about the guys we could take in threads lol. You can’t win. Tennessee needs to recruit TE and IDL better but they have a good class coming in
DL? That’s the one position group that held our defense together all season. And it looks like Lott and Omari are returning and we have a lot of young talent that is coming up.

I’m amazed you posted this and didn’t say DB. Our DBs are average at best and need the biggest influx of talent. Boo is good but he can’t do it all.

You don’t like Jordan Matthews, Rickey Gibson, John Slaughter, Kaleb Beasley, etc?

They have one IDL committed this class and he’s a project that has most experience at OT. It was about recruiting not development. They just didn’t recruit any IDL this class really. DB recruiting has been fine. Rickey Gibson, Jordan Matthews, Kaleb Beasley, Marcus Goree Jr at corner last two years. Boo Carter, John Slaughter, etc at safety

if i am going to lean toward questionable at recruiting in this one example, it is this.. i think that heupel himself, and the offensive staff as a whole, did not set this team up for success by getting caught up in the joe milton hype a second time and not bringing in another solid tier 2 QB to be the backup and be there in case milton just didnt work out a second time. that decision boxed him into a corner where it was milton or bust, and the results were an OK season that failed to capitalize on the momentum from last year and really in one sense has set our recruiting back at least a year as it pertains to playmakers. i say that even though they have matthews committed, but the knock on heupel a year ago was "can his offense develop players for the NFL?" You then had last year and the thought for a lot of people (even on here) was "well, you can just plug any old WR in this offense and it will make them stars. dont worry about recruiting 5* recievers, he can make a 3* a 5* just by putting him out on the field" Now, after this year, if i were recruiting against TN, my argument to a QB or WR would be "the rest of the SEC has figured out his scheme and now they are a running team. you want to go there and block as a WR or handoff as a QB?" Now, this year, i see a few guys in the transfer portal who could help us and in the case of two (Nolen and Wells) i hear that the asking price is too high. I am sorry, but i can understand a lot of things as to why the did not pursue a player, but i cannot accept anyone saying the price is too high. the price has never been too high over there for anything. Fire a coach, stroke a check.. Revamp a locker room, stroke a check.. Dont want to hurt Fulmers feelings, stroke a second check to run him off. So to tell me they cant stoke whatever check to bring in the top transfer player at a position of need, nah, dont try to sell me that. i will believe a lot about that place, but not able to afford whatever they want, is not one of them

What exactly have any of them shown so far on the field to know that they all panned out?

Need better linebacker play. That’ll help the back end and the DL

Problem this year was an injury to Pili which forced all young players to play. I think they wanted it to be 80% Beasley and Pili.

Not talked about but Beasley played injured all year which is why you saw him disappear down the stretch. He gave his all for us.

Telander, Carter, and Smith are good talents and needed a year to grow physically and learn. They will be much different players next year and you can rotate them with Pili.

Bama is a dynasty with a possibly the great college football coach ever and Georgia looks to be a very close second. Nobody is on their level.

Ya, I don't think it can be possible for anyone to get to those levels. Maybe 8-4 with an occasional 10 win season is all Tennessee can hope for going forward

Which is where most of college football is. Being in that range hopefully give us the opportunity to get in the playoffs in the 10 win seasons.

I’ve always believed in-conference winning percentage tells the tale.

Since Tennessee joined the SEC in 1933 we have had a .750 or above winning percentage in conference play 32 times.

We have been below .499 in conference play 23 times.

The glory days of the Fulmer era saw 13 consecutive years of above .500 with 9 of those years above .750 in conference.

For Heupel to be safe in this era; he really needs to stay above .500 in conference play. Above, .750 at Tennessee leads to extensions. 1 season below .500 will put him on the hot seat. Multiple seasons sub .500… He won’t survive.

I think it is more about Sprye failing than Heupel. Our NIL has sucked, we keep losing big name recruits to NIL payment yet Sprye supposedly is one of the wealthiest NILs. Hasn't shown yet.

Ding ding ding, I loe the price is "too high" argument. The real issue is Sprye. Start asking them why we keep missing players.

Not for Missouri, they have done it 3x since joining and did it this year. Kiffin and Ole Miss have done it twice already.
Beat the teams your supposed get us to 8 wins. Beat Florida and it’s 9. Get lucky in one of the others and it’s 10. It shouldn’t be that hard with a competent coach and players. We seem to have one of those things right now. The rest will hopefully come.

People are so extreme today. Either someone is AMAZING or they’re DOG 💩. There’s no in between.

It is possible for a movie to just be a nice movie to see that isn’t “amazing.”

It’s possible for Huepel to be a solid recruiter that can still get better but also can’t be reasonably judged on one class when 18 year olds are making decisions. 🙄

Mizzou didn’t play Bama every year.

Ole Miss didn’t play UGA every year.

Those 2 programs have dominated CFB for the last decade.
Mizzou has been here 13 years. And had 10 wins 3 times.
I’m not sure that’s the overwhelming success we’re looking for

Going back to recruiting, one thought is people are forgetting we have major scholarship reductions still in effect from Pruitt Era as well.

They are not major lol. We can reduce like 2-3 per year now and we counted most reductions the first two years when we were very low on numbers.

They just had back to back losing seasons. This was a down year in the SEC and they had a veteran team. They’re going back to irrelevance next year

They're confusing "hard" with "possible".

It's like they're saying, "That guy's run three triathlons this decade, so it must be easy to do."
