Is It Common to Have a RS Freshman As the Holder?

What’s more is I didn’t realize the guy was 20+ years old and is a pro athlete. So, we look to be ok there.
One thing VolNation should be ultra-rich in is grace.

If not knowing ever became reason to remove posters, this site would be Freak's Blog in a week.

I always prefer when the punter can be the holder. It's another opportunity for him to be aware of the ball's "feel" as the game progresses (esp. important in rain or cold) and more "practice" handling game-situation nerves.

Stressing is a strong word. Just a question. It’s an important position that requires poise in moments like the winning kick against Bama and other moments. I would expect that we will have some close games that could come down to a field goal.
Jeepers Wally I sure hope the Coaches have thought about this.....oh my! The sky may be falling....😟🥺

Quick story that is sort of related to the thread.

My son's senior year of high school football was in 2020 - the COVID year. The team had a great season, won the region, and recieved a 1 seed. My son also had a great year, played both ways, was 1st team all region, honorable mention all state, and played in a couple of post season all star games.
The team won the round 1 home game.
They had a round 2 home game against a 2 seed.
They were down by 2 and driving for the winning score. The drive stalled and they had to settle for a field goal attempt.
It was about a 25 yarder - a distance they had made consistently all year.
There was a bad snap that resulted in no kick. They lost by 2. Would have had home field again in round 3.
Here's the "kicker".
The long snapper was a senior who did nothing but long snap. (ended up with a scholarship for long snapping)
The Friday afternoon of the round 2 game he was contact traced for COVID. He didn't have it, only had sat close to someone in class who tested positive that day. He was not allowed to play in the game.
The backup snapper who was a freshman, made the bad snap.

In 38 years of collected data, there have only been 147 teams starting the season with a RS freshman or True freshman holder. Only 46 of those teams are from current P5 schools. The alarming part is that less than half of those teams made a bowl game, and only 3 made bowl games we would consider to be good bowls. No champions.

Actually, I made up everything above. No one tracks what year the holders are, or how common that is. If we have consistent problems in the kicking game due to the holders not being able to get the ball down quickly, laces out, we can become concerned then.
You could’ve just went with the first paragraph and no one would know. Give Volnation a week of running around worrying about the sky falling bc we have a true freshman holder. 😂

And does anyone think that it could be slight cause for concern?
Well the punter is many times the holder. My office manager's son in law was the punter and holder for UAB. What's funny is he was invited to try out for a couple of NFL teams, but was never signed, but the kicker who he was the holder for became an NFL punter; who never punted in college.

Remember when the back up QB was always the holder though? Not just for us but as a standard in football. It made fake field goals more of a threat.
Our punter was the holder last year. That is done a lot of times because the punter is used to handling the snaps from the long snapper in their normal role. They just have to learn how to get the ball down in the correct location with the laces out. Also, our punter/holder is a bonefide athlete this year and can add more of a threat for a fake than even a backup QB could.
