Is the Junior Nation becoming bad for the sport?

No one can make blanket statements saying that all NASCAR fans are like the more EXTREME members of Jr Nation. I am a dyed in the wool NASCAR fan but if anybody wrecks any of my drivers, sure I'll be furious but I won't do something stupid like make a death threat against the offending driver. I vent but then I get over it and move on.

I fully agree the sport needs a rivalry and/or bad boy vs hero diatribe to build interest. I enjoy it myself, but I nor most fans don't go looking for fans of the villian to take our anger out on if he takes our driver out. Nor do I or most other fans throw objects on the track. These are the things I am focusing on.

Well said, "Good Guys vs Bad Guys" is great for sports, especially individual contests.

NASCAR seems too clingy to "Family Oriented Event" crap that they put the kabash on any good rivalries before they heat up enough to get exciting. If Junior sent Kyle for a spin next weekend, he'd be in deep s*** with the bigwigs. I'm not advocating a season long spin out contest, but a little tit-for-tat over the course of a few weeks is great, especially for gathering interest and improving TV ratings.

I remember Dale Sr. fans being just as obnoxiously defensive of him.

I used to go to NASCAR races frequently, but don't go as much anymore, and from the actions of the fans at some of the tracks, I'm glad I don't. I am still a fan and will watch on TV, but really don't care to go anymore. I remember several races I went to in Charlotte and Darlington, me being a Gordon fan, wearing a Gordon t-shirt around and getting yelled at being called a queer, queer-lover, flamer and several other obscene phrases that just completely turned me off from going. The behavior was not limited to just Dale Earnhardt or Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans, it was anyone and everyone who disliked Jeff Gordon and/or Jimmie Johnson. After seeing the reaction of some fans throwing stuff on the track just because Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson wins a race is pathetic and embarassing. But, it's what you get when you combine alcohol, long days and racing. I figured out it was a lot better to be a fan from home rather than a fan at the track.

Now, I don't think Jr. nation is bad for the sport. Without all the Jr. fans, NASCAR isn't as popular as it is. The actions of some of his, and other drivers' fans, are bad for the sport. When you watch fans throw crap on the track after a driver they don't like wins the race, that's bad for the sport. It just adds fuel to the fire to the guy who thinks all NASCAR fans are stupid rednecks who can't act with any class. The majority of NASCAR fans are not like that at all, but the select few can ruin the entire bunch and give the sport a bad reputation.

The best response so far. Let me be clear this thread isn't implying Dale Jr. having a lot of fans is bad for NASCAR, but is asking if the actions of some of them is bad for it.

The actions of some of several drivers' fans is bad for the sport. I've ran across some extremely abnoxious, rude, and classless Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson fans. I think there was a pic after Gordon's win at Talladega that started the beer-can throwing onto the track a couple years ago of a fan being arrested for throwing stuff who had a 48 shirt on. There may be more of the Jr. fans doing that, but they're not alone.

The worst thing right now for NASCAR is the product they're putting on the track, not the fans.

I agree with all of this to an extent... many times I wish there werent as many Jr fans as there are.. I began to like Jr bc my father liked him and also bc I like his personality... that being said, I cant stand to see some ol drunk redneck in the bar with a sleeveless Jr shirt on.. either we need more redneck drivers to steal some of the redneck fans or we need Jr to do something to piss a lot of ppl off :good!:

yeah Im sure ill catch some flack about having a GHG avatar and hating on rednecks

agreed.... thats the "rednecks" i was referring to

Jr's fans may not be the only ones who throw things on the track, but it only seems to happen if he gets wrecked or if an enemy of the Nation wins (Jeffy)

Oh, no I was talking about the above posts. I Like Tony's show too.

You get to see more of the real Tony. He did have considerable concern over the throwing of stuff that was hitting his and Martins car. Mark even had vision problems on the restart due to being hit on the windshield. This is going to lead to no cans or plastic bottles being allowed in the stands. The only beer or soda allowed will be sold in cups by the tracks. The track owners will be fine with that.
