Is the Junior Nation becoming bad for the sport?

. This is going to lead to no cans or plastic bottles being allowed in the stands. The only beer or soda allowed will be sold in cups by the tracks. The track owners will be fine with that.

At which point I'll stop going to NASCAR events.

Agreed, i have seen something like this coming for a while now. It would really hurt the viewing of a race if you couldn't bring your own food and drink, it already takes a good 10 minutes to go take a leak with green flag racing, let alone going during a caution when everyone and their brother go.

You and a fair number of others I think, so my premis of is the Jr. Nation potentialy detrimental would be answered positively if the crowds decrease should this happen.

I only go to one race weekend a year, July in New Hampshire, It's a relative bargain, $150 for Busch and Cup tickets per person, $22 a night for camping Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, plus the obligatory T-Shirt and the occasional hat.

However, if you factor in set priced food and beverage for the time me and the wife are on the premisis, you could nearly double that cost.

Adding in that going to get a beer or coke or to take a leak will cause me to miss 10-15% of the race, assuming i go 4 times (honestly, i go to the cooler for beer more than 4 times, but at $8 bucks a pop for keg beer in a paper cup, i'd go alot less), I'll give up the great experience that is live racing for the best seat in the house, the living room grandstand.

The 3 short tracks here in Connecticut charge for beer, $5 for a 24 ounce draft, reasonable compared to most set price places, but you can bring in food and soda. It sucks, but the financial boost from beer sales is needed to keep them in business, and i don't mind it. However, that is a friday night out of the house, whereas race weekend is a financial hit from the get go.

Rbroyles, I agree with your opinion about throwing cans being unsafe and detrimental to the sport. But I don't agree that it is just the JRNATION doing this. There are more than just JR fans that do partake in this type of Behavior. JR Fans are noticed more because of there being more of them. But to limit it to just JR nation is something I can't agree with. And most JR Fans do not behave that way. I would think at a Bristol Race out of 160K that 60 percent are JR fans I could be wrong. So that would be about 96K JR fans now lets say that 5 percent of them or about 1 out of every 20 act this way. That puts the number up there to about 4800 Fans. That is a large number thinking of it because of the large number of Jr Fans but it doesnt include the other 91.2 K fans. Now if you were to say a % of JR Nation is detrimental to the sport (as is a % of any other fan base) then I would agree with you 100 percent. We might not agree on the % though. :)

I don't think I've said that the Jr. nation is the only ones throwing stuff, but they seem to be the only ones you see do it, others may join in just to be idiots, but they have to have someone start it. I agree with your 60%. And I know it is only a fraction of those who do the stupid things, but I think it is more than 5%, maybe 10%. Possibly more at Dega.

I could see it being as high as 10 percent with alcohol being involved. Yes Dega would be even worse considering the location. :)

Nobody is saying it's just Junior fans but it only happens when there is an issue where by the Earnhardt name is done wrong. You didn't see the fans doing it when Gordon spun Kennseth in Chicago a few years back. Or when Smoke and Harvick hit each other at Bristol.

This is what I think too, just didn't say it clearly.

Not a big open wheel fan but I do watch the Indy and I will be rooting for Marco Andretti. He didn't qualify to well. Should be a good race.

note: i didn't see a single beer can thrown at Rowdy tonight after the race. i did see one as he was taking his pre-race lap around the track thrown at him.

Maybe they decided to just drink them and drown in their sorrow. It was a bit of a surprise though. I don't think anyone has ran a race that hard from start to finish at Darlington before, and survived. Surely he didn't get some respect, nah.

from nascar.com:

Do the boos bother him? "Not really," he said. "I don't care. I'm here to win. If I win, it just makes 'em more upset and crying on their way home. By the way, somebody threw a beer can at me. Next time just make sure it's full so I can enjoy it out there, all right?"

pretty funny as bad as I hate to admit it

Doozer, did you go??? I got to see if first hand last night and I am embarrassed. I know not all Jr fans are like that but where I was at least 80% of them were. The whole backstretch was covered in beer cans, bags and even someone's cooler. It was horrible. I just dont understand what good that does. Does Kyle see it, does it affect him in anyway, does it hurt him?? No, just some poor dude in a street sweeper has to pull up and pick them all up. Its a damn shame.

I was wondering. I figured they didnt show it on tv. It was horrible! This is my 3rd year going there and this is the first time we really had a bad time. The crowds are usually not this rowdy.

This is the mob mentality that I am concerned about. Wonder if NASCAR has some censoring power over TV to keep it from being shown, or did Fox not want to encourage it at Charlotte.
