Race enters the equation in four ways:
1) Martin was black.
2) Suspicion that Zimmerman was following Martin initially simply because he was black. While I think Zimmerman clearly has some kind of overactive obsession with being a cop, this particular claim I wonder about because on the 911 tape he says he can;t tell what race Martin is because of the hoodie. Its only after a little bit he can tell the dispatcher the race.
3) Suspicion that the police did not take the case seriously because the victim was black. Now, this is part and parcel of a larger problem in that community, which has existed for many decades. It is something that has to be worked on, and this incident is bringing all of that to the surface.
4) Hijacked for personal reasons by the leaders who don;t have the good sense (or ability, either one) to harp on 1 and 3 above, legitimately, but tell people we need to wait until the facts are in on 2, above.
