It's Gut Check Time in Tennessee

I can't figure out why this team has so many TO's. They look like an average Jr high school team trying to dribble and pass the ball. The talent of the past is not there, but the men have the same problem also, but the LV, wow.
I’m not going to disagree that TOS are an area of improvement for the LVs. Every team has its weaknesses and this is ours. I will , however say, I primarily look at the box scores for other games and I have seen top ten teams with some jaw dropping TO numbers this year. I wonder if teams are generally staying away from small kids with great handles. Please don’t everyone list the 4’11”
Guard for “Iowa State” who averages .0072 TOs per game. I said generally.
I’ll see if I can find any stats on that.

So, interesting TOs are not the easiest thing to find info on.
Did find fewest TO per game. Top 50 in NCAA includes Arkansas and Mississippi State at 2 and 3 and LSU at 47th. All in the 12-13 range. Missing from the top 50. Lady Vols, gamehens, Connie and Stanford.
Rebounding difference nationally - Clucks 1, LVs 2

Wynn is a classic example of athlete first, basketball player second. She needs to learn how to play and not just attempt to "out-athlete" the opposition. Could very well be a situational player, because that jump shot form is fugly as hell. I mean, so is Anastasia Hayes', but she has a lot more overall talent. Tennessee will need to get a really good shooting guard for when Horston leaves.

I know redshirting wasn't an option for depth purposes, especially after losing Marta, but Wynn and Striplin may as well have.

Puckett is about what I expected, a player who started slow but has developed into an important, versatile player off the bench. Miles playing her way into the rotation so early was a pleasant surprise. Wynn and Striplin being complete nonfactors this deep into the season has been one of the bigger disappointments IMO. I really thought they would be contributors off the bench by now...

Offensive foul is considered a turnover. Shot clock violation, too.

Puckett came to college ready to play. She was a pleasant surprise. She plays smart and under control. Miles is another one I wasn't expecting to play much, but she's carved a good role for herself as a regular rotation player and has done well. I figured that Wynn would be a project, but was shocked that Striplin is having such a hard time adjusting to the college game. Hopefully, this is just a freshman adjustment period for her and she comes back ready to be a regular contributor next season.

So I did find SEC stats for assist to turnover difference and LVs are bottom at number 14 and clucks are number 12. Given the juxtaposition of rebound stats and assists to turnover ratios and won/loss records it makes one wonder as to the relative predictive value of the two statistical measures. Insufficient sample size but it does lead one to consider whether a dominant rebounding team is more successful than a great ball handling team.

like Coach K said,,,its not the turnovers it's the "kind of turnovers"

On the turnovers and being out-rebounded by Florida…
"We've had turnovers throughout the season. We've had 18 before, but the way we turned them over was detrimental to our team. We gave up five wide-open layups off of turnovers. You cannot do that, so that was really disappointing. Looking at the boards after watching the game back, Florida did a really good job, and they are very disciplined with their positioning, but we were not in position to go get boards like we usually are. A lot of that had to do with the lack of poise in the backcourt, and then poise moving into the frontcourt moving to be able to run our offense. When we run our offense, we are in better position to rebound, so it's all connected. Everything that we do is connected."

Striplin needs a speed and strength coach ASAP. I think Kaiya has to learn how to play basketball on the collegiate level. She has all the tools and will be better next year and a beast by her jr year.

I agree with you 100%. There is definitely something gone wrong with the team chemistry and as outsiders its hard to pin it down. I would agree Kelly and the coaches probably know what's going on but fixing it may be tricky without blowing things up. I have coached females' before. Coaching the sports part of it was easy, the team chemistry was way more difficult.
The clicks and team chemistry was part of Holly's
downfall,,,JMO.

I'm not sure Kaiya has "all the tools" since she's not just raw; she looks like she doesn't have good basketball instincts or form. She'll be a good defensive stopper off the bench for the next few years, but I hope they shore up the SG spot with upcoming classes.

I agree with you 100% about Kaiya i post about her after the Fla game being raw. She has very good quickness and plays tough defense, But her shooting mechanics is a real problem right now from what i can see.

Well, we disagree on that. But that’s okay!

update: Get your life vests on, folks.

Ok. Now I feel stupid. Were we all on deck on the titanic, the music playing around us, and just clueless to what was going on? Sadly, I can see Lady Vols dropping 3 or 4 more in Sec play. The dangers of this 3 game stretch was always that it could snowball into a devastating end to the season… it seems destined to do just that.

All this talk about well they're just freshmen, it seems to me like freshmen on other teams do quite well. Are we not recruiting the good players anymore?
