Its time for a new era in UT football.

I think you can trace virtually all our problems to weakness in the secondary (defensively). We lost 3 to the pros and other than Jason Allen, we've been playing musical chairs. Not only do they give up plays through blown coverage or missed tackles but we have no play makers back there - too few interceptions. Have we had any interceptions taken to the house?

The O put up 600+ yards, had trouble punching it in but 30+ points ought to be enough against a UK team that ranks near the bottom in every offensive stat (till today :p )

Bottomline, we will have Phil until he screws up consistently or Tommy Gallion pins the Nicole Simpson murder on him. Freak asks the right question - who would you bring in? Pretty hard to justify getting rid of Fulmer at this point. The recent bowl performance and inconsistency are troublesome but I just can't see how you can justify getting rid of him.

Milo stated that UM probably is the most consistent team (I'd say Nebraska until the last year or so). Look at Lloyd Carr's record - it'd be hard to justify firing him but CPF has more accomplishments and the same record this year. Look at what happened to Nebraska - fired Solich for underachieving and as a result, they'll miss their first bowl game in something like 35 friggin' years. As I said, until you see consecutive 7 - 4's or worse, CPF isn't going anywhere.

Well, lets see. Allen is a Senior. Most of the others are freshmen or sophs. I cant see why our secondary looks so bad.

We knew going into the season we were weak in the secondary.

You knew right --

All I'm saying is that this is our Achilles' heel and you can trace back most of our problems to this part of the D. Could be recruiting - could be coaching. Either way, it's a problem.

Or it could be Freshmen and Sophs, inexperienced at playing the position. I agree, its a problem.

That's why I suggested recruiting. We are stuck with fresh/sophs, none of whom seem to be that good. We've even been putting Wade in at corner. This is a whole set of positions where we don't have talent comparable to every other position on the field.

Alternatively, it could be coaching. The talent is not being developed.

I read a theory once that said UT will never have a fearsome DB corps because we recruit LB's and make DL out of them. We recruit DB's and make LB's out of them, leaving a talent hole in the defensive backfield.

Seems we have success at coaching up the converted DL and LB's, but little if any success at coaching up the DB's.

Question for everyone who agrees with this subject: WHat coach would dare want the Head Coaching position at UT after we fire a coach that took a young team to a 9-2 record and an appearence in the nations best football conferences championship game?

Anybody remember the name Ron Zook and the pressure to win he had (more importantly, the results)?

That's my objective opinion. I would have said Nebraska except I think that their glory days have come to a quick halt.

This makes us look like the most ridiculous, spoiled fans in the SEC.

Man I thought the cold weather , rain, and the sub-par performance by the defense brought me down saturday, but after reading these post, i am really depressed. We could have a program like Vandy and Kentucky with only 1 win in the sec....That would really give us a reason to be down....Or our football program could be like our mens basketball program, that would really give us something to gripe about....We finished the regular season 9-2 I think that is great with having as young as a team that we do......proud to be a vol....

We are all proud to be a Vol. We are all greatful that our team that was picked to finish 3rd in the SEC East is 9-2 and going to the championship game......

That being said, I don't think questioning why our team chronically underperforms against the obviously weaker teams in our conference makes us "bad" fans.

On the contrary, I think holding our coaches accountable for "finding a way to win" against a team that you are favored to beat by 28 points is perfectly logical.

I don't condone the firing of Fulmer, but I do expect him to recognize that new blood is needed within his coaching staff (look at the differnce the new running backs coach has made) and act accordingly.

I look for the best defense in the country and go after their number 2 defensive coach. ( he's the guy doing the work).

Expecting continuous improvement in a program is why the top tier teams remain there.

Milo points out a UM team that is perennially at the top... So did we already forget the Citrus Bowl after the disgusting loss in the SECCG in '01? With a young Casey Clausen, nonetheless, we CREAMED those guys.

Listen, you can bitch and complain all you want, but Fulmer is a top rate coach, and until he goes the way of JoePa, he will be here at UT.

Ah yes, the 2002 Citrus Bowl. 8th ranked Tennessee versus 15th ranked Michigan. The Wolverines were poised to finish in their customary spot atop the Big Ten when they lost their regular season final to Ohio State, 26-20, to finish the season 8-3. The Vols were coming off a heartbreaking 4th quarter breakdown to LSU... losing the game... the SEC Championship.... and a spot in the National Championship game. The Vols were 10-2.

The Vols pounded Michigan from the outset, winning the game 42-17. Casey Clausen passed 26-of-44 for 393 yards and 3 touchdowns. Donte Stallworth led the Vols in receiving and rushing (8 rec for 119 yards and 2 rushes for 44 yards) and Witten had 6 receptions for 125 yards. Kelley Washington caught 6 passes for 70 yards and 2 TDs. Travis Stephens had 16 rushes for 38 yards and 1 TD.

How many teams have had the success that UT has had in Fulmer's tenure?

Michigan and FSU come to mind as programs who have consistently finished in the top 25 year in and year out during that time. Many top programs, including those at the top today, have had far worse downs than UT has had. Some of you folks talk as if those 8 win season we have had were 4-7 seasons.

Do I want better things for UT? Yes. I am also a realist and I know that UT is not going to win the SEC or National Championship every year.

Michigan just got killed by OSU last week
And 2 years ago ended the season with two losses
Lost to Northwestern the year before that

They do struggle at the end of the year
