IU Football Head Coach

It's not like he came in for two seasons, took a 3 win team to extraordinary heights, or did some incredible job. He had well over a decade to get by Oklahoma and a Texas team with a mediocre coach. He never could. He's just not that good.

Last 5 years, beat Oklahoma 3 times. I'd say he figured them out pretty well.

Weird-Yes
Good coach? Yes. I think his offense and how many teams are trying to do the same thing is telling. I listed all the coaches that have hired guys to put in a Leach-style offense. He's an offensive genius, put him on a team that is not at a talent disadvantage and see what happens. We'll see what TOmmy can do vs. Texas and Oklahoma in his tenure there (so far 0-2).

2 of those OU teams were 8 win teams.

And yet had a ton more talent than any of those Texas Tech teams. That Texas team he beat in 08 had way more talent than his team did. His flaw was controlling the game on defense because he simply didn't have the athletes there. Do you think with the money Miami would throw around that 1. He couldn't get a good a great DC 2. He couldn't get great defensive assistants. Also, he would never have a talent disadvantage.

There's no denying his offensive mind... his track record and coaches that try to mimic him prove that.

Then maybe he should try to be an offensive coordinator somewhere.

Being from just outside of Bloomington and hearing A LOT about this story...her is what I have heard lately...
1) IUs AD (Fred Glass) is new to the job...he is best known for recently getting the SuperBowl to come to Indy in 2012...and then hiring Tom Crean for BB coach.

2) IU (Fred Glass) is NOT interested in Leach...nor is Leach interested in IU. Glass stated that he wants someone of character with ties to the midwest and can recruit Big 10 country well...Leach has none of that.

3) There are a few names that are out front...
Brady Hoke...currently at San Diego State, last at Ball State, prior a Michigan assistant...has the ties to the Big 10 and midwest, would love to come back, proven to build a team up, right now the front running candidate...will have to wait and see what happens with Michigan and the RichRod thing, if Hoke could go back to Michigan, even as an assistant or OC, he will.
Scott Polian...currently an assistant at Stanford...son of Bill Polian (GM for the Colts), has strong ties to the midwest in family, friends, and contacts...not sure how well he could recruit the midwest...although, it has been suggested that IU is not that interested in someone with little or no head coach experience.
Gary Patterson...ot sure since TCU is now heading to the Big East (i.e. automatic BCS bid easy)

There are a couple of co-ords and such being bantered around, but as of now...that's about the pile.

Even if TCU was not going to the Big East IU has ZERO chance of getting him as a coach. Once again the budget for football is 6 million.

Agreed, however, Fred Glass has said many times that he wants...actually needs...to increase program spending. Now that IU has updated their facilities to "Big 10 like", he wants to lure a Big 10 level coaching STAFF, not just head coach, that is Big 10 caliber.

He's looking at reaching out to the "old money" folks who were around when Bill Maloory was taking IU to the rose bowl and having winning seasons. Some of these people include names like Bill Cook.

FWIW, I would love to see them succeed, as I am a loooong way from seeing any great college football games in person and would like to just drive 20 mins up the road to catch a good game every now and again.

Yep. If Patterson wouldn't take the K State gig then he sure wouldn't go to Indiana.

Kind of a surprise hire here...announcing today the OC from Oklahoma...Wilson to be new HC at IU

Any chance Mangio returns to OU as OC? Sooner fans loved the little round guy. Sports Animal speculating Jay Norvell and Josh Heupel will be promoted as C0-OC.
