I am a Tennessee fan until the end of time, but it is pretty clear, to me anyways, that something doesn't add up. He was very unhappy at the end 2015. It was rumored that he was contemplating transferring then. Is there any way that he wouldn't have been better transferring to Juco rather than what happened?? His stock was as high as possible then. He could have had his pick of schools. However, it would have been a huge red flag to recruits and signified that something might be amiss in Tennessee country.
All of a sudden, coincidentally at the same time the rumors started, Tennessee starts incorporating a lot more single back looks and even the occasional lead blocker for Hurd. What happened to his production? Hurd produced three of the best games of his career to end that season (151 yards vs. Missouri, 120 yards vs. Vanderbilt and 130 yards vs. Northwestern). This puts him at ease thinking that he has an actual chance to succeed going forward. Why wouldn't it? It was largely successful for the whole team. Then, they reverted back to the same slow developing spread looks and qb read options that caused the original problem. Classic Butch, loves trying to fit round pegs in square holes...
If I squandered my best chance to transfer because a coach gave me his word that we would move in this direction, and then ultimately deceived me, I wouldn't be happy either. I don't think he quit on his teammates one bit. I think he finally realized that they weren't looking out for his best interest. If it doesn't help BOTH parties reach an agreed upon common goal then one is just using the other. Why should he struggle in a scheme that CLEARLY isn't catered to his obvious strength? Butch would never promise or even allude to something to get a recruit to come here. Coaches would never do that! Brick by brick, right? The man is a SAINT. Maybe... Or a used car salesmen. Depends on who you ask.
College football is set up to be a VERY predatory affair. Can't win without those Blue Chippers! Can't make all of them happy... Can't get them here without telling them everything they want to hear. Somebody is going to get lied to. The whole model is built upon the exploitation of an unpaid labor. Is it REALLY hard for everyone to see that this is EXTREMELY common place and par for the course? No way that this could have happened in this situation? It is hard to see the forest with all those orange trees in the way...
Good luck Jalen. Do what is best for you, most coaches absolutely won't. That isn't their job, winning is. I would not play another game for a coach that blatantly misled and endangered my lucrative future either.
