This kid looks very impressive. Although he doesn't play as highly touted highschool teams, his numbers can not go unnoticed. You can only play the hand that is given to you, and he is a man amongst boys. I have played runningback my whole life. I will say this. IF and I say IF Hurd can learn to play at 6' and keep his leverage low, and if he continues to play with that kill attitude like he has; Hurd is the kind of player that can take a team above and beyond all expectations. He has the potential to have the kind of impact that can make an average team great. Everyone talks about him being to tall, but height doesn't matter if you play low and with an attitude. He has all the potential but he must put in work. The thing I notice most is that he has massive legs, which means he has a lot of room to grow and will not lose speed. Being a running back is all about legs leverage and awareness. He has 2 of the 3. We must wait and see about his leverage. Often times he runs at 6'3 and just relies on breaking through bad tackling. With this coaching staff though I am convinced this kid will be a huge star and could become one of the sec's best backs in the past few years. He is not a 4.3 guy (high school clocks r off by a tenth or two) he is more around 4.5 but he gains speed as he runs. So he will be a homerin guy.

I think as long as Hurd plays behind his pads he will be quite the asset for one hell of a Tennessee team being built by CBJ.

Live 1 mile from his HS. Watched him for 3 years. I'm gonna get killed but here goes;
Jalen has got to recover from a MAJOR shoulder injury first. He hasn't lifted weights in a long time, his weight is down below 200. His injury has been downplayed greatly.
Now as far as running styles go, everyone has their own opinion, but Ive never considered him a bruising or punishing style of back. he is more of a sliding style that uses his speed once he sees a crease or lane open, but he does not
".run over" people.
Last but not least, he has a little maturing to do. After his injury this year he came to only a few of his teams games, and he needs to understand how much he will be in the limelight and watched at "all" times..
If he can recover physically, and mature some, the sky is the limit

I agree for the most part. In highschool though a lot of running backs that are highly touted do shift because they are just so much faster so it's easier to run around the competition, and so there is no point of risking acl injuries when u can run past ur opponent. He does need to take rehabilitation serious though for the shoulder.

1st. When did labrum surgery become "major"?
2nd. He runs "over", through, and "around" people.
3. Posters on THIS SITE have photographed him working out AND there are numerous reports of his training regiment.
4. Do you know why he missed some games? No? I dont either. Maybe it is too painful to watch his team play without him.
5. Haters gon' hate.

Thank you for honest assessment. Most concerning thing in your post is about his shoulder injury, although surely by summer at the latest he will be fully recovered. Our strength and conditioning program will get his weight and size right so not worried about that. Definitely not worried about his attendance of his team's high school games - who wants to watch high school football (with exception of Texans) unless forced to do so. In all interviews I've heard he sounds like a well-grounded, good kid. Lastly, you can't teach size, but you can teach running style, so again not real concerned about this either.

He played in 5A . I believe they are in the same division as Josh Malone's team and played Vic Wharton and Gaulden's team. I don't know where this he doesn't play against good teams comes from.

Haters gonna hate. He's to big or he's to small. Somebody has to say their opinion. They will all be on the Hurd bandwagon soon. I believe he will be Adrian Peterson in the SEC. He is as big as the linemen but faster than the cornerbacks. You're gonna see a lot of people diving at his feet.

JH kinda reminds me of Eric Dickerson, a tall back that did very well for himself.

Remember watching 29 run, he didn't look that fast but nobody ever caught him from behind, one of the top 5 running back that every played the game, if JH comes anywhere close to what ED did then we will be singing ROCKY TOP a many Saturday nights after Jalen rolls up 150 yards plus game after game.:) Don't wear the goggles.

I find it hard to believe that you have all of that info just from living a mile a way from Beech and watching him play for his three years.

1.) His shoulder injury is actually recovering well and he is lifting though not quite at the level of pre-injury yet. Sidenote: He also hasn't dropped below 200lbs, a shoulder injury would not warrant a drop of around 30-40lbs not even in the worst of situations.

2.) When he has needed to run over someone he has. I've seen every run Jalen's had in the past three years and when it was necessary he got it done. Otherwise it would just be a player risking his body for know reason.

3.) The lack of attendance of his high school games this year bothered me a bit, but I attribute that to the fact that over this past year he has seemingly formed a tighter bond with his future teammates and has spent time attending their games and traveling to Knoxville on the weekends to recruit for UT.

All in all I feel there is little to be worried about. The only thing I worry about is the risk of him hurting his shoulder again, though after the extensive precautions they have taken with him this year I feel like the chances are slim.

I'm glad I have never seen him play. I have little to no expectations for him. In my book he is not the next coming of anyone. He is not the savior of UT football. Just another recruit for next year. And that's good enough for me. Anything above and beyond that is just pure gravy.

Like I stated, I knew was going to get killed.
1> If it was just Routine Labrum, then no, it would not be major. But this injury was understated. Loosing a chunk of bone is Major. Shoulder recovery is harder than most all joint repair because that joint moves in more directions than the knee, elbow, ankle, etc.
2. I said everyone had their opinions on running styles, and I just stated mine. Those who see him as a bruising punishing Eddie George type of running back, I just don't see it yet. Maybe he will
3. Im going by what I saw a week ago, He has lost a lot of weight and upper body bulk.
4. I know more than Im going to say on here about why he missed some games his team played, Im not hating on him, just stating the obvious. He was not there.
% I don't hate Jalen at all, I did a jig when he committed. Dooley had it so screwed up the Kid was headed to OSU or Bammer before Butch made him the first recruit he saw last year on day 1.
As for maturing, it means understanding that he has to hold himself accountable at ALL times. No keg party pics etc...
