Lot of revisionist history here. Hurd is a very good back who ran behind some absolutely CRAP offensive lines at UT, in a scheme that certainly didn't suit him (or would suit any power back). Our line his freshman year was terrible, with a capital T, and only marginally better the next year. About 80 percent of his yards came after he got belted at the line of scrimmage. I still think Hurd will be in the NFL.
While I certainly agree with much of what you said, it doesn't tell the whole story on Hurd. For example, his best yards per carry average came in his first year, behind that awful line, and dropped off from there....4.7 to 4.6 to 3.7. All while Kamara and Kelly were doing a much better job of running behind those crap OLs. That could speak to them being better "fits" in the offense.....but it could also speak to them being better, more talented running backs in general.
Also, if you go back and tally it up (I did once awhile back), it's amazing how many negative yardage runs Hurd, a 240 lb back, had, bad OL or not. He simply did not/does not have good enough burst and balance to be a premier running back imo. Recall Jon Gruden talking about Hurd during the Outback Bowl saying he needed to be better "running through the trash"....I think that's what he was referencing.
Finally, Hurd had no breakaway/home run ability at Tennessee. Nearly 600 carries and not one 50 yard run. Additionally, his highest single game rushing total was only 151 yards in 33 career games....and that only coincided with his career high in carries for a single game (34). And of his 33 career games, in only 9 did he average more than 5 yards per carry.
No, the truth about Jalen is that he was a good back, mainly a short yardage back who occasionally turned 2 yard runs into 5 yard runs, who often only got the yardage that was there and no more, who way too often was dropped for negative yardage and who simply could not turn a 6 yard run into a 60 yard run like the great ones do.
I'm not much into prognosticating what a player is gonna do in the future, but I think it's difficult to see how Jalen's gonna do very well vs elite NFL competition based on what he did at the collegiate level.
