Jalen Steele leaving MSU

Yep, but I'm confused on what he is doing this season. Staying at MSU? He can't redshirt if his coach doesn't allow it, and if he doesn't participate he gets kicked off the team and his scholarship gets revoked.

EDIT: Ah, strange. I guess they're allowing him to redshirt afterall. Then all he needs to do is graduate on time, and no waiver needed.

Right.

Yea I think they're allowing him to redshirt, but not play NEXT year for them.

Well, good for MSU and Ray, that's the fairest outcome. It puts Ray in a spot, because he can't fill Steele's roster spot this season, but there's really nothing to be done about it.

Its like Big Ziti says it helps MSU's APR if they let him stay and he graduates. If I were him I would graduate and then transfer to Tennessee. It would be a perfect situation for him because we are losing 5 players after this season if not more. He could probably come in and start or at the very least compete for a starting job next year. In reading other msg boards some people have indicated that he is interested in doing this. Go Vols!

This seems to satisfy both parties. Steele gets his redshirt, graduates, and transfers, and MSU doesn't take another APR hit by him leaving or being dismissed.

Very unlikely to happen because Zo and Ray go pretty far back

I don't think Ray would care if he went to Tennessee for 1 year. He's from Knoxville. Miss St only plays Tennessee once a year. According to some posters who know Jalen on other msg boards it is something he and his family would like to do.

Why would Ray care if Steele came back home to play? Steele wants to finish at Mississippi State, but Ray won't allow him to, why should he care where he goes?

Because Ray wants Steele to play this year and Steele wants to wait. And because Tennessee will be on their schedule in 2014-15.

I guess, if Ray is worried about Steele playing somewhere else that's his own fault...Steele wants to finish his career at MSU.

But if he graduates doesn't he get to go wherever he wants? Ray has no say, right?

That was my understanding as well, but Pastner told Barton he couldn't go anywhere that Memphis played this year...so apparently there are some restrictions, I don't know.

I think he still must be "released", or sit a year for transferring without a release.

There seems to be confusion with that graduate transfer process...seems to always be said players can transfer anywhere that offers a graduate program their current school doesn't, but yet we see restrictions like with Barton. Will be interesting to see if Ray puts any restrictions on Steele.

I played four years for Coach Wright at Fulton. He is a great guy who doesn't bull****. I would love to have Jalen come back home and play.

Cuonzo and Ray are buds. Ray wouldn't want his ex player to play for another conference school and Cuozno wouldn't take him out of respect. My opinion.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. If you're Martin, this is a business about results, you can't let old friendships hinder that IMO. If Calipari had a chance to add a kid Memphis wanted, would Cal step aside because of a friendship with Pastner? If Martin feels like Steele could be a contributor and instant impact guy on next years team he should look to add him.

Hypothetically, if we got him what do you think our guard rotation would look like?

I agree with what you're saying, but I think Cuonzo will leave this one alone because of his character. If Cuonzo is on one end of the character spectrum, and Cal is on the other end, then it's easy to see who would do what in this situation.

I agree 100%. No way I would bring in a 30% shooter who also had issues staying within team rules while at Miss St. JMO

Anybody know what rules he violated this past season? My guess is smoking the cheebah...
