Jalin Hyatt - WTH?

So essentially the complaint is things that are extremely difficult to predict and involve multitudes of data points and variable factors are hard even for experts to predict.

Wow, deep insight. Thanks!
Rather than being a smart aleck... why not honestly deal with the point you responded to. "The experts are wrong more often than they are right". No one said predictions weren't difficult for a lot of reasons. You for some reason felt a calling to be the defender of experts... who in fact are wrong as often or more often than they're right in spite of having access to a lot more of the "data points" than those on message boards.

(P.S. the experts on this still get it right more often than internetz loudmouths)
Do they? They get it right more than me because I very, very seldom make any kind of prediction about things that I do not control and that have so many "data points" and "variables". But I suspect there are some loudmouths on the internet who do a pretty good job.

All those items he needs to work on could and probably should have been accomplished if he had stayed anther year in college. Some players mature later than others and those who fit that category need to stay in college through their Senior year.
I was honestly surprised when hearing he was declaring for the draft due to the parts of his game that still needed ironed out to be an NFL receiver. I thought he would try to add some weight and get better vs man coverage then leave after senior year. Then I also thought about how this is a weaker draft for WRs and that maybe he had gotten word hed be taken high enough to go ahead and declare.

Tebow would’ve been a horrible running back…same opinion I had for Steve Young. Most of the rushing yards stemmed from the physical mismatch when receivers were being covered downfield and it was down to him and a nickleback or pursuing linebacker. Lined up behind a quarterback with the defense keying on you removes that element and highlights your lack of burst out of the gate. I do believe if he’d have acknowledged reality and tried TE before his 30’s there was something potentially special there.
Agree, but he would have been a better RB than QB. In fact, he was one of the worst QBs ever drafted.

AR reminds me a lot of JaMarcus Russell, except he had a less impressive college career. There were lots of warning signs about JR but at least he was a good college QB.

When commentators are asked what is the most impressive thing about a player, and the answer is something that sounds superficially impressive but actually doesn't have anything to do with playing the position, it's a huge red flag. The thing from the pre-draft process I heard the most about AR was him hitting the ceiling of UF's indoor facility during his pro day. The "most impressive thing" about JR during the pre-draft process was him throwing the ball 70 yards in the air from his knees at his pro day. Those are cool party tricks, but does it mean he'll be great at playing the position in the NFL?
Wait, you mean cornerbacks aren’t just going to stop at the line of scrimmage and let him throw to uncovered receivers?

Probably got scared when he saw what happened to Tillman. Those freak injuries make rolling the dice for one more season an awful large gamble once you are certain of being drafted now

After winning the Belitnikoff, the only way is down imo. Look at Addison. Stats and stock dropped playing in a better offense. Still gets selected by the Vikings in the first round, but considerably lower than was projected going into the season. Hyatt had to consider what happens to his if he doesn’t replicate a comparable Bama performance the following season with a different QB.

Hooker will be a solid backup in the NFL and Hyatt will not make it. He will get really hit a time or two and be done. IMO...

Don’t flame him. If he ends up correct, he’ll quote his post and compare his psoriasis to nail holes. If he’s wrong, we’ll never see him post again. 😏

How about a dose of reality as it relates to Hyatt. A very, very high percentage of his success came from Heup's scheme. Not to mention the fact that he was matched up against the other team's 3rd DB. When you take a hard, unbiased look at the young man, he was very fortunate.
Putting your 3rd db on Hyatt would get coaches fired. Put on the Bama game tape and tell me any of those TDs were on 3rd dbs. It's a stupid theory when you consider Tillman was basically out all year. Sc put their best guy on him all night. GA too. Hyatt has some wiggle and his routes are solid for the most part. Sure he needs to continue to work on routes and hands. But to say a guy who caught 15 tds and over 1k receiving had teams third best db is beyond absurd

. . . and Anthony Richardson doesn’t complete that many passes (or win very many games) but he is somehow a top draft pick. A different position, I know but I don’t see how Hyatt is getting this much doubt put on him.

I hope Hyatt and Hooker absolutely destroy the NFL to prove all these fools wrong.

Go Vols!

I dont believe Hyatt is the best receiver to play at UT not even in my lifetime. However what he did this past year is the single greatest season we have had at the position. Just the Bama game alone is worth 10,000 memories that won't be duplicated. I would almost fuarantee Hyatt is faster than he ran at the combine. Now if he can put on some pounds and keep the speed, he should adjust. Let's see where the guy lands. His work ethic alone will keep him in the game if he can gain weight and avoid injuries

In the Bama game he kept burning the safety. It was talked about reguarly by the media talking heads that they couldnt believe Saban didnt make adjustments to where Hyatt wasnt matched up against a safety who couldnt cover him.

Yeah. I love Hyatt but there is a pretty long list of WRs that were more likely to be UT's all time best. Stalworth was pretty amazing. Price was probably a better version of Hyatt.
If CP had been a VOL for 3 years then he would have been the undisputed GOAT!

At the end of the first round last night on ESPN, Mel Kiper talked about Hyatt and Hooker and Tillman still sitting on the board as Day 2 gets underway tonight.

Eric Cain predicted Hooker to Seattle and Tillman to Atlanta as well as Wright going to Chicago in his prognostications for this draft on the Thursday podcast of Locked On Vols.

Hyatt is one dimensional in that he’s basically a speed receiver and he didn’t run as fast as people thought. His ability after the catch is average at best. He doesn’t make people miss. I would take him late 2nd or Leary 3rd.

Don't know if you've been corrected on this or not, Hyatt was #3 in the nation in Y.A.C. That's far far far more than "average at best."

Bummed for Hyatt not being a first rounder when the run on WR happened. In regards to the whole “system” critique, I get it. This is the Baylor offense we run with the veer and shoot.

Go back to the WR’s drafted from Baylor: Terrance Williams, Kendall Wright, Corey Coleman. All 3 were 1st or 2nd round picks. None panned out. That was 8–10 years ago but they were considered 1 trick ponies, kinda like Hyatt.

But going day 2 isn’t horrible. A lot of great players have awesome careers going in day 2. Just gotta go to the right situation to maximize your potential. Same thing with HH. They’ll both end up in good spots and hopefully be successful.

OK. Since you decided to pick nits to start this whole string of comments... Please provide your objective proof.

Just to be clear, you would like objective proof that experts at making NFL draft picks, like NFL scouts that have played and coached the game, watched film, understand their coaches offensive & defensive schemes and philosophy, conducted interviews w/the players, run psychological evals and background checks, etc. are better at picking draft picks than random guy on internet message board w/fake name like sjt18? That's the ask?

No thanks. I'm not sure I can give you objective proof that chocolate ice cream tastes better than dog $hit. In fact, I've never eaten dog $hit. But everyone who's not missing a few chromosomes knows that's the case and I have no desire to provide that evidence for you either. So continue to eat your figurative dog$hit if you'd like. Res Ipsa Loquitor.

I can't say, nor can really anyone, who is the best wide receiver we've ever had. An argument could be made for Carl Pickens or Willie Gault. But Hyatt had the best season here, we've seen from a receiver. It'll be hard for anyone to surpass it. I doubt I live long enough to see anything like his destruction of Alabama, that alone should make him a strong candidate for All-Time First Team Vol offense.

I do marvel at people saying Hyatt can't run routes and at the same time saying he's a product of the system. The system requires running tricky routes. That's why we see him and others extremely wide open.
