to a great extent, the expectations of the 3-D industry ride on “Avatar.” “When you look at the history of film, there have been to date two great revolutions—sound and color,” Jeffrey Katzenberg, the head of Dreamworks Animation and a tireless promoter of 3-D, told me. “This will be the third great revolution. People are still somewhat skeptical and wonder if it’s a gimmick and if it is better suited to cartoons. I don’t believe that for a second. I think the day after Jim Cameron’s movie comes out, it’s a new world.” Michael Lewis, the C.E.O. of RealD, the leading 3-D projection company, says, “The industry is looking for its ‘Citizen Kane,’ its definitive work of 3-D, and ‘Avatar’ may be that film.”

Be forewarned, length and language are stretched. Quiet possible the longest read in Volnation history, with explicit language. However, well worth the read!

I stayed with the head motion capture guy on this film about a year ago. He said the 3-D stuff they developed is just incredible.

Movie doesn't really interest me, but from everything he told me and I've read, I'll have to check it out.

Movie looks interesting, but it's like they ripped off random vehicles from various other scif fi projects. The little walker things from the Matrix trilogy, the flying vehicles from Halo 2/3, etc.

Just saw the new three minute trailer that Fox showed on the Cowboy's Jumbo-tron and national Television simultaneously.

Looks like a solid story. Can't wait to seen the new 3-D technology.

I'm looking forward to seeing it, but I'm more interested in the special effects. The story sounds like a re-hash of "Dances With Wolves" or any other movie that involves a protagonist that "switches" sides.

I hope this 3-D technology is more than just market puffery.

We'll see...

Good interactive interview. Showed bits and pieces of scenes. Then an entire scene at the end. This movie is going to make money. Reportedly the cost was 250 million to complete. It was designed to be a franchise. Will it beat Titanic for most gross or money made? Before this I had my doubts, but I will concede that now there is that possibility. Stunning, simply stunning.

Yes and no? Yes and I believe a new kind if I read correctly, to match the new tech. No most movies show both ways, however with Cameron you never know.

I'm just saying I'll be happy to see this movie in 3D, but if Cameron thinks I'm going to go buy special glasses to see the damn thing he's got another thing coming. Now if they want to give us the glasses I'd be more than happy to use them.

It happens with all 3-D movies these days. They sell the glasses and movie as A Special Event. Usually cost three dollars more than normal depending on location.

Honestly I've never seen a 3D movie before, and I don't even know where to go see one. I think I might just watch this over the holidays at the Mall of GA IMAX

Yep, I do believe that's the optimal setup right now. I think I'll break down and pay for the IMAX screening as well.

And if you really haven't seen a 3-D movie ever or in the last 5-7 years, you will be in for a treat. It's pretty amazing, and this one is supposed to be even more bad ass.

Anyone seen this yet?

I'm taking off to watch it now. Hope it's not a let down. With all the hype that surrounds this film the new tech needs to be as advertised.............

I saw it yesterday.

The 3D and special effects are incredible. Amazing.

The story and dialog is really weak.

If you have to see it in 2D, I would pass. But, it's just too incredible in 3D to pass up.

Saw it last night. Visually it's amazing and I don't know how anyone can call the story and dialogue "really weak." Great special effects and weak story/dialogue is something I expect from Transformers, which Avatar is definitely not.

The story's not original but that doesn't mean it's not engaging. James Cameron knows how to tell a story. This movie is definitely worth seeing in theaters in 3D.

I think the problem with the story, aside from being unoriginal, is that it lets Hollywood continue with it's trend of anti-military movies. The putative US military machine invades a pristine environment filled with wondrous creatures and the indigenous population is seen as a hindrance that must be dealt with.

Enter our hero, through whatever plot device, he is able to ingratiate himself to the natives, at first working toward the goals of the military he serves. Eventually, he comes to see things from the natives' perspective and proceeds to turn his back on his brothers in arms, which are portrayed as marauding villains, so betraying them appears to be the morally appropriate thing to do.

it's "Dances With Wolves" with hovercraft and feathery dinosaurs.

Cameron didn't intend to make this as an anti-military movie though. It's what we do as Americans. Another race/species has something we need, we do whatever it takes to get it which is usually by force.

It is like Dances with Wolves with different creatures and setting. A story doesn't need to be original to be told well. If anyone expected to be blown away by some groundbreaking storyline, you're an idiot and didn't read a 2 line description of the movie.
