Jamie Newberg thinks we lead for Luc and Green (merged)

Kevin Simon was the #1 Safety in his class I believe.

Perhaps by scout or someone else but not by Rivals. Rivals had Kevin Simon rated as the #1 LB and the #2 overall prospect. He was the top-rated defensive player that year and they rated him correctly. Despite several knee injuries he was good. His freshmen year, before his 2nd knee injury, he looked like a future All-American.

As for Jason Allen, he was the #5 rated Athlete, not RB, although he was a really good RB in high school. Again, I'm going based off Rivals but that just goes to show that recruiting analysts, like the UT staff, envisioned him on either side of the ball, not just offense.

And when someone says Crompton was a 5-star, do us all a favor and call out BS cuz although he was the #2 rated pro-style QB, he was a 4-star and rated in the 50s in the Top 100. He dropped just a bit in his rating after his sr year, as I remember.

Btw, I think when talking about past recruits, everyone, regardless of their preference, should default to rivals. I do. lol

So if we're basing everything off Rivals, Cobbs is an ATH, not purely a WR.

I honestly havent cared for Newberg since his days with Scout. If hes right on these then he will be ok I guess but till they sign I still dont care for him and dont believe anything he says.

Newberg's expectations for Tennessee's class:

I think USC, Alabama, UF, LSU and TN will fight it out for No. 1. I don't think Texas or Penn State will have enough numbers. Yeah, that's four SEC teams. Too hard to say who will have the best class right now. Even on Signing Day it will be splitting hairs. Just too close to call because I think they are close exceptionally well.

Yes, I think they (UT) finish in top five and challenge for No. 1.

We have a lot of 50/50 guys who could go either way and give us that no. 1 class. I think if we max out at 28 then we have a shot. I really don't see LSU out of that bunch being much of a factor compared to the rest. I honestly the SEC could go 1,2, and 3 with the 3 teams being us, Bama, and Florida.

LSUs class is straight up nasty right now. That's not even counting that they will probably get Seastrunk and Reed when it's all said and done...

I agree about it being a waste. Les sucks, but they are gonna have so much talent coming in in the '09, '10, and '11 classes it's gonna be ridiculous...

Anywhere close to the top five and I would definitely not trade our class for one of the top three. A lot of the classes inside the top 10 are really splitting hairs to rank, and I will take our coaches' player evals over anyone elses.

"My sleeper here is Tennessee. Last season, the Vols proved rather quickly they are a coaching staff to be reckoned with in recruiting after they came out of nowhere to land running back Bryce Brown and wide receivers Nu'Keese Richardson and Marsalis Teague.

The Volunteers are currently in striking distance of the top spot, and all of a sudden find themselves near the top with such prospects as linebacker Luc and offensive tackles and Jawuan James and Chaz Green. They are also working blue-chip recruits like wide receiver Dunkley, running backs Michael Dyer and Seastrunk, linebacker Jones, cornerbacks Terrence Mitchell and Menzie. Then, you have to worry about some committed prospects that Lane Kiffin and his staff will put the full-court press on like quarterback Jesse Scroggins, offensive lineman Shon Coleman, linebacker LaDarius Owens and safety Matt Elam.

Really, there's no prospect you can sleep on with Tennessee. This staff is that good. They are relentless.

So will it be USC or Florida at the top spot? Can Alabama three-peat? Will LSU get the key recruits to claim No. 1? Will Kiffin and Tennessee shock the recruiting world once again? Can Notre Dame sneak by everyone? Regardless of what happens over the next 70 days, it should be the wildest recruiting ride ever, as what these six teams do between now and National Signing Day will likely dictate which gets that coveted top spot in the land."

Newberg was talking about UT's chances to have the #1 class today...
