Jarret Guarantano better than most vol fans think

I like the heart that JG has given for the VOLS, but if he has another INT or continues with late/delayed passes and making throws into triple coverage then is it worth bringing in the next QB up?

Let me start by saying that I appreciate that this kids wanted to play for the Vols. However, it is becoming more and more clear that he is not the QB to lead this team out of our troubles. Watching him all last year and the two games this season, it is clear that he has not taken the necessary steps to excel at this level. Last week he was horrible and tonight has not been any better. He has over thrown a couple of players, an intentional grounding, multiple passes where the receiver bailed him out from an interception. He has on at least two occasions gotten the ball to the open receiver late, both if completed on time would have been a TD. It is time to move in from this train wreck.

I was logging in to say after actually seeing a game this year, I think it makes sense to give JG the option to transfer out. I think he gets four games? Who knows, maybe he needs a new start or different system? Maybe he turns it on? I remember seeing an interview of him where he talked about his faith and community service. Love this kid, but when the interviewer talked to him about going pro, JG sidestepped that notion.

I haven’t been able to get that out of my mind. He seems too passive. Smart kid if you give him time but not very quick on his feet. I mean that both figuratively and literally. He was supposed to be the next Dobbs, but he is far from it. Anyone could hand off the ball as many times as JG has tonight. He is probably the worst QB we have had since I have been alive with the exception of Dormady who was hurt. The line needs improvement, but no more blaming them.

That is the story of this game. 3 possible TDs lost bc JG was LATE delivering the ball.
He has to recognize quicker. He is making Freshman mistakes and it's not good.

Also, Jennings has to catch that TD even if the pass was late.

Late with a throw into double coverage again. Not learning and making the same mistake again and again.
None of this is new with JG. He has 3 very basic problems as a QB.

1. Cannot read a defense pre-snap.
2. Has trouble reading his progressions.
3. Has difficulty feeling pressure in the pocket.

All of this causes him to pick a receiver before the ball is snapped, stare him down, hold the ball too long, and force it into coverage. He also lacks touch and frequently throws the ball too hard for the type of route he’s trying to hit.

None of this is new...he did it all last year too. The stats favored him, in spite of these shortcomings last year.

It’s too bad...because he truly seems to love Tennessee, and isn’t wholly unlikeable.
