Again....it's relative to the offense. He believed it was none of the NCAA's business in the first place, whether some of his players wanted to sell their own shiite. And I agree with him. I'll be damned if I let a bunch of bureaucrats tell me I can't sell something I FREAKIN OWN. I don't even think that would hold up in court.

In fact, that is probably the coarse of action he should have taken instead. He should have threatened legal action against the NCAA if they tried to prevent in any way the freedom of players to sell their own personal belongings. That would have made them back off, IMO.

So you have no problem being a perennial second tier SEC team?

I don't think you know how bad a show-cause is. The penalties not only follow him and restrict him, especially in off-campus recruiting, but also, if a school hires a coach with a show-cause, the school is also subject to sanctions as well.
Again...you didn't read the article, did you? If you did, you wouldn't keep repeating this nonsense. You're comparing apples to oranges. Trying to say that the penalties they give one coach applies to another.

In Tressel's case, he is NOT restricting in recruiting...can you not comprehend this? HE IS NOT RESTRICTED IN RECRUITING...BECAUSE HE DID NOT COMMIT A RECRUITING VIOLATION. The committee on Infractions determines what penalties he would have to pay. In this case he would only have to sit out 5 games and if a team went to a Bowl Game, he'd have to sit that out.

That's a small price to pay for a coach who has proven to be a winner...one of the best. Even if his team lost in the NC to 2 SEC Champions. If Florida had the best team in the country...so freakin what if he had the 2nd best. I'd take that right about now.

Also, if he could recruit lights out in the Big 10, why would he not be able to recruit even better in the SEC?...now that most kids know that's this conference is king.

Regardless of the legal side of things we had Kiffin and Pearl in the last 5 years. We don't need anymore drama on rocky top. Hiring Tressel would once again put us under the microscope and besides he's 60 years old. No thx.

I didn't read the article because the idea is complete nonsense.

He's got a show-cause, and to add to that, his style would drive Vol fans absolutely crazy, especially with our roster.

It's an awful idea to hire a coach who can't beat Bama, FL, or LSU. Not competing against the top of the SEC is why people want Dooley gone. Tressel couldn't do it with much more talented teams.
And who in the Sam hell have we beat in the last decade. Use some common sense man.

He would not put us under the microscope. He made an error in judgement...not a major one, IMHO, for the reasons I previously stated....he's paid/paying for it, and I don't see how that would jeopardize the program.

Again, the AD would appear at a show cause meeting, state that they are hiring him, that he's already paid a stiff price for it and they have confidence it won't be repeated under their watch (they can put some accountability measures in place to placate the NCAA). Tressel got a black eye on this one, but most everyone knows he's a high character guy. Not a shady one like Petrino. Because the NCAA knows this too, they may very well agree to reduce the penalty (5 games), now that he's been away for a year+.

So hire a coach who improves our record marginally but isn't capable of being SEC elite? Doesn't sound like common sense to me.

Man, this is just not true. he knowingly and willingly covered up violations. When confronted he even said he didnt know who to report it to. What kind of a dumba** response is that.

However, I could care less about a show cause too. I dont want him cause I dont think he's a very good coach. IMO
What violations? Seriously? How in the Hell can the NCAA dictate that an athlete cannot sell their own personal belongings? The whole notion is BS, in the first place. I don't blame Tressel for this. It's totally stupid for the NCAA to have stuck it's nose in this in the first place. Has nothing to do with Agents, players getting paid by boosters, etc. This is a clear case of the NCAA overreaching.

Bruce Pearl on the other hand, should have just admitted a simple mistake (would have been only a secondary violation), and moved on. He had NO reason to lie. Conversely, Michigan, MSU and Penn State fans tried to make a case out of some of the players selling some of their own memorabilia and cried foul to the NCAA. Tressel thought if was a bunch of BS and didn't bother to comply with the silly little witch hunt.

If the NCAA ever make a dumba$$ move, this was it. There was no violation in first damn place. The NCAA has no legal right to dictate what individuals can do with their own personal belongings, and OSU should have simply threatened the NCAA with legal action if they didn't drop this witch hunt.

Recruiting to the Big Ten and recruiting to the SEC at a (traditionally) premiere program is two different animals. Why can you not comprehend this? It's like bashing Strong cause his team feasts on Big East teams with losing records. He is winning with what he has to work with. Getting Teddy Bridgewater to Louisville was a feat all on it's own.

Maybe Bobby Bowden was never a really good coach cause he lost to the Gators his share of times through the years.

It's all relative. If you can win the NC and a few years later lose twice in the NC, to SEC teams, that is STILL proof that the guy knows how to win.

You have to remember, in the Big Ten, you recruit largely out of the base from which you are in. If Tressel can steal the Lion's share of talent in TN, NC, SC, KY, and in GA, like he did in Ohio and the surrounding states, then he can likewise terrorize the SEC, the way he did in the Big 10

Ok, fine. Lets assume for a moment that you are king of the SEC and you change the rules so a player can sell anything he wants. Do you really want a from OverratedU who has never beaten an SEC team? The fact is what he done was worse than Bruce Pearl but even if that never happens there is no way in hell I would want Jim Tressel coaching the Vols.

Link? Pretty sure the NCAA found no fault either in the UT AD or Kiffin. Can't believe how much dis-information goes on in these boards.

Tressel a weak coach in a weak conference? Are you freakin kidding me? If his team can get to the big dance and yet loses to the SEC's best...how does that make him a loser? In the SEC he can terrorize the other coaches the way he did in the Big 10.

Ask Michigan, Michigan State or Penn State fans if he's a weak coach.

Google is a helluva thing:

It’s official: NCAA accepts Vols’ self-imposed sanctions | CollegeFootballTalk

Long story short, the NCAA fould 12 major violations for basketball but none for football and accepted the self-imposed penalties.

The entire AD is under probation through 8/13 and the football program lost 6 days off the recruiting schedule.

Back on the subject of the OP, I have 2 points.

1) Hiring Tressel would be about the dumbest thing UT could do. It would reek of sheer hypocrisy in the wake of how they handled the Pearl situation.

2) You're making a huge leap in comparing what Tressel did in the Big 10, which has been exposed time and again as one of the most overrated conferences in the country, to what Stoops, and especially Meyer and Saban have done.

Why should I google? You made the assertion. It's your responsibility to back it up. Not mine.

You didn't even read what you linked to. The NCAA does NOT have us on probation...genius. WE IMPOSED THEM ON OURSELVES!

Good gravy's....this board is rife with disinformation. A lot of it is just laziness. Talking about things they never even took the time to read/research on their own.

Plus arguing with idiots who think 1 National Championship and 2 other trips to the BCS NC, isn't enough proof that a guy can coach. "He lost to some SEC teams, so he can't coach a lick." Fulmer lost to Florida practically every year. That made him a lousy coach in the 90's, eh?

You are simply parroting the nonsense that has been prevalent on these boards. OSU may not have won the last two NC's against SEC teams, but the fact that they won one and appeared in 2 more, shows that the guy can indeed recruit and coach. I don't think OU could beat the SEC Champ most years either, but that doesn't preclude him from being a top notch coaching candidate.

Put either Tressel or Stoops in the SEC, where they can recruit very well in the south, and I don't see why they cannot succeed.

Quote where I said they're on the same level. The one thing they have in common though is that neither have shown the ability to beat the top of the SEC. Tressel would be better, but I don't see any reason to believe he could get us where we want to be.

But if Gruden is out of the question, Tressel would be a steal. He'd take considerably less than what he was making at OSU (especially if the AD can't get the NCAA to reduce the penalty down from 5 games...maybe 5 non-conference games instead of the first 5 of the season?), and that could help a great deal in getting the absolute best staff possible, while making Dooley's buyout easier to swallow.

Ohio State is a national brand and Ohio is near the top of talent rich states. If Tressel had issues fielding talent that could beat the best teams in the country there, he would have the same trouble it here.

I don't buy the talent excuse, though. Those teams had Troy Smith, Ted Ginn Jr, Beanie Wells, Antonio Pittman, Vernon Gholson, etc.

No it doesn't. He would still have to sit out of all practices, games, meetings...everything, for his five first weeks of the season, and he couldn't recruit.

Not going to happen, and it certainly isn't a "deal".

I swear, this Tressel nonsense is just about the stupidest thing I have ever read on this site, and that is saying a bunch.

So what? The man has dominated his conference over the past decade. No reason to think a successful coach in one major conference can likewise succeed in another. Big Ten teams not matching up well against the speed and defenses in the SEC is not a reflection on his own merit as a coach.

Also, someone said he's 60. So what. That doesn't mean the guy is going to keel over tomorrow. I think Carroll and Fulmer is in that age range now, and then Kansas State's HC is over 70.

The Committee on Infractions signed off on the self imposed probation, plain and simple jackass.

Whether it was initially self imposed or not, the NCAA currently views the UTAD as being on probation through 2013.

Any coach that thinks the punt is the most important play in football is going to have a hard time energizing a fan base direly in need of it. The only time he managed to win head to head against the SEC was against Arkasas, his teams wilted against LSU and Bama on the big stage.

Now, run along and knit a sweater vest.

We'll just have to agree to disagree. He won in a week conference where he didn't even have to play a conference championship game. His last four recruiting classes averaged 8th so he supposedly had talent yet no Tressel coached team could touch the SEC even with weeks to prepare. Not the guy I want to see them go after.
