But, but, but, the OP stated and restated his points many times, so they must be correct.
Cause idiots keep coming with this nonsense that "show cause" is a ban from coaching, and that one of the most successful coaches in the last decade is worthless cause they lost to an SEC team in their last 2 NC appearances. That's why I mentioned from the outset, asking posters to FIRST read the damn Sporting News article...so I wouldn't have to keep arguing points it clearly makes.

You don't have to, you choose to.

You are either incredibly dense or a master troll.

I am leaning heavily towards the former and not wasting any more time trying to bring you up to speed.

The NCAA did impose sanctions on the UTAD and it is irrefutable. It's linked in my last post.

And again, Tressel would be an incredibly stupid hire for a program under NCAA probation with one former coach and assistants under Show Cause penalties already.

Good luck with that sweater vest.
Rain Man...read it again. Maybe it will finally "click" for you. It said the NCAA accepted UT's OWN IMPOSED PENALTIES and did not add to it.

There is no way that UTK, having just been forced to fire its most successful basketball coach in the modern era for lying to the NCAA, is going to hire a football coached who also got fired for lying to the NCAA. No chance. Ed Orgeron has a better chance at the job than Tressel.

If they can't lure Gruden, Strong or Patterson, I would seriously consider it.

In this case, the coach has already paid a hefty price for a very minor offense. They wanted him to hammer some of his players for selling their own shiite? I would be like, "Funk the NCAA, this is not an infraction/offense," too.

Tressel is a lousy cheat. Being the best of the Big 10 is like being the principle of a home school. Doesn't really mean much...

Keep the sweater vest out of Knoxville.

5 games/weeks of sitting out, is a small price to pay to get a coach that otherwise would be impossible to hire away from OSU. 3 NC appearances in the last decade and won one of those. Dominated his conference for the greater part of that time.

His suspension runs from the start of fall practice until the end of the 5th game. He also has a postseason suspension from the last game of the regular season through the end of the bowl game (this includes conference championship)
.

No one is saying it is an actual ban. It is effectively one though.

The NCAA can accept self-imposed probation/penalties, but can penalize the institution if they do not implement them.

Let's say Bama plays in the BCS NC again, and subsequently get's into some NCAA trouble for a few players trading some of their past bowl game memorabilia for tattoos....big deal, right? And let's say it turns out that Saban didn't discipline them enough for us opposing fans, and/or didn't report it to the NCAA. Let's say they get slapped on the wrist with a bowl ban for a year and Saban gets a show cause of only 5 games.

Then here we are....looking for a HC with a big name and winning resume. Would you want Saban to fill that role? Honestly...would having to sit 5 games (maybe less) be too big of an obstacle to dissuade us from hiring him?

If not, then why in the hell would we not SERIOUSLY consider Jim Tressel? The guy is on the same scale as Saban, Meyer and Stoops. I say screw that. I can live with that scratch...which completely goes away after 5 games at the most. No lost recruits. No bowl bans. No NCAA trouble for the program (as so many fear). It's a fresh start, and the NCAA would not be snooping around, regardless of what many (falsely) assume.

Don't give any of that "Can't beat SEC teams" nonsense. Even Bama lost to an SEC team last year and nearly did to us in 2010, and LSU this year. Plus, they beat a very good Ark team, with Mallet as their QB, the last time they played an SEC team.

The guy can flat out recruit and most importantly...flat out coach. Here's one of the most compelling reasons for this AD to consider...he can be hired for pennies on the dollar = much more $$$ to hire an Allstar staff....including a top tier Coordinator, who can handle bid'ness for the first 5 games (he actually paid that penalty last year with the Colts, as an assistant to them...so it's very likely the AD would be able to get a waiver or reduction).

Go ahead and flame, if you must, but I honestly think Tressel would be the ultimate "Scratch and Dent" steal. Many fanbases of NFL teams are mentioning his name. He's got a scratch...yes. But one thing he is NOT damaged goods. One National Championship and 2 other appearances, in the past 6yrs make that very clear...if we are willing to look past the "scratch."

Jim Tressel could get hired after*flimsy NCAA show-cause penalty - Andy Staples - SI.com

For those of you who want to keep spouting the nonsense that "He can't coach for 5yrs" read the ruling, verbatim for your damn self (Page 20)

Recruited Ohio. Hes not in Ohio anymore. Would fail miserably.
So, he hires big name staff members, with connections in Florida, Georgia, California and/or Texas...why would his connections in Ohio disqualify him as a serous candidate? We wouldn't want to cherry pick athletes from Ohio as well as the South?

Is he even allowed to coach?
Yes, he is. A "show cause" simply means that any penalties the NCAA applied, will follow the coach at his next destination.

5 games and a bowl game (1st yr only) is the MAX. That is it. The AD and Tressel would simply send their own letter stating that they will comply with the penalty and sit him out for those games....or they can appear before a Show cause panel and ask for a waiver or reduction.

Since it has been well over a year removed, and Tressel already paid the penalty (voluntarily) while an assistant with the Colts last year...it is very likely that the NCAA would grant some relief in this regard.

Plus, the AD can assure the NCAA that they have already put stronger internal accountability measures in place, resulting from Bruce Pearl's infractions. I don't think he's anywhere near as "toxic" as many claim. His offense was actually very minor (players trading their jerseys for tattoos...are you kidding me? THAT is an infraction? No wonder he didn't report it. Doesn't even seem like something you would report, in the first place)

I think what you have is opposing Big Ten fans making a mountain out of a molehill, and they instigated the NCAA into making a major case out of something that isn't a case to begin with. It's silliness, and the NCAA got prodded into the whole ordeal.

No.... no no no
Because he didn't report players trading their own stuff for tattoos? Are you freaking kidding me? How in the hell is that an infraction to even report? It's utter BS, and the NCAA should have NEVER, EVER gotten involved in the matter. He lied? About what? The players didn't do anything wrong.

If one player trades his hat for an iPad, you think that is something you'd turn in to the NCAA? Hell no you wouldn't.

Tressel's penalty is very, very light. And even that is way too much for the alleged infraction. This is definitely a scratch we can afford to overlook, seeing that we are getting a Saban/Meyer/Stoops level HC for pennies on the dollar.

This is nothing more than a witch hunt by the opposing Big Ten teams fanbases. There was no damn infraction to begin with. Trading a jersey for a tattoo is no damn infraction, in my book. Nowhere near what Petrino did.

He received a 5 year show cause. That shows it was serious. You don't get it. If these infractions were so minor, a school would've gone after him by now.

I just explained, and so did the article...that you don't get it.

It IS NOT a ban. A show cause is nothing more than the NCAA ensuring that a penalty applied to a coach follows him to any prospective destination.

The penalty they applied is a virtual slap on the wrist. 5 games + 1st yr bowl game...that is it. He already paid the penalty with the Colts last year, so it's very likely he'd get a waiver from the NCAA, if UT were to hire him.

0 - 9 against the SEC in his last nine bowl games. A real proven winner in the SEC.

I love the idea of Tressel becoming Head Coach here. He can out recruit anybody, has good x's and o's (Colts liked him well enough to hire him temporarily), and he is a national champion coach at two different NCAA divisions of football (Ohio St and Youngstown St) with over 80% winning pct. Obviously the NCAA didnt find out anything serious like paying players, point shaving, and stuff like that. DONT RULE JIM TRESSEL OUT JUST BECAUSE HE HAD A WITCH HUNT CONDUCTED ON HIM BY ENEMY SCHOOLS LIKE BRUCE PEARL DID. TATTOOS AND BAR-B-Qs IT'S ALL BS.

Link? :loco: I got to see this. He beat Ark, with Mallet, in the Sugar Bowl, the last time OSU faced an SEC opponent...so, your are definitely talking out your arse.
