Jim Tressel (merged)

I would actually be ok with this. Next year likely won't matter anyways, with Dooley or any HC we hire. It will be at minimum 2 years until we see 9-10 wins. This team is losing too many offensive weapons at the end of the season (probably) and god don't get me started on the D

He is unhire-able at the moment. (see link) Signing Jim Tressel may actually be seen as a reason for the NCAA to initiate actual penalties against UT for hiring him. No way that is allowable.

If all the options say no, which I doubt, we should hire Tressell. Here is why...

Tressel is 229-79-2 with the record he had at Youngstown st and Ohio St. He was 94-22 at Ohio St minus the 12 wins he had in his last year. 1 year of show cause isn't going to hurt guys. I don't see why we don't hire Tressel he would be a tremendous hire.
Also to add he won 5 National Championships at Youngstown St before he came to Ohio St. He of course won the National Championship at Ohio St. The guy can flat out coach. I just don't see what the problem is with this guys. The Show cause penalties are not that bad.

Tressell should be our number one choice. I don't see why we shouldn't hire him. I think he would turn this program around in a jiffy.

Go Vols find the right hire.
+1. Our criteria should be to find a HC (not a coordinator) with not only the ability to show he can win, but do so on a consistent basis. Finding one from a major conference is a major plus. So, if you put the "NCAA baggage aside for moment," He is at the very top of that list. Even above Gary Patterson.

Now, because of the baggage, I think Patterson should be the first one in line (after Gruden)....but seriously, when you consider the fact that we could get the most winningest/prove prospect available (relatively speaking) for mere pennies on the dollar (because of the baggage), then that leaves lots of room to spend big on the best staff he could assemble...including NFL assistants if he wanted. Surely a top notch Coordinator/Assistant HC can hold down the fort during the 5 games he'd have to sit out (he already paid the penalty at Indy last year, so it's likely that would get reduced)

Now, the next ? is...realistically...how bad is the baggage? Well, consider that the NCAA, a few years ago briefly looked into Bama's Book Gate and decided not to pursue it, I doubt they see Tressel's offense much worse...show cause or not. Why? Cause it was essentially the same offense. Some athletes selling their own stuff. In this case, textbooks, instead of jersey's).

His players traded a jersey for tattoos. I say....

Jim Tressel is radioactive. Tennessee needs bad PR like a hole in the head. It will never happen.
Only to the extent that clueless fans make it out to be. When they look a little deeper, I doubt many will care.

Bottom line...he could still go into recruits homes and look the momma's in the eye and say "I didn't think players selling or trading their belongings was worthy to be considered an infraction. The NCAA thought otherwise, but I've learned from it." I'm sure that would be enough to squash those concerns. On the other hand, you have Petrino. How can he convince a kid's momma that she can trust him to instill character and integrity in the program when he shows none himself?

No way you can hire a coach knowing you would have to go in front of the NCAA and HOPE they did not make an example of you for hiring a coach with a show cause. The NCAA would look at Tennessee as snubbing their nose at their punishing JT. Not a good idea at all.

No thanks, He would have us on probation in no time
That's just a silly over-reaction. No reason to think so. That's just ignorance talking.

If we were talking about Cam Gate or buying players off, or covering for failed drug tests, etc. I could see that. But lets view it for what it is. A silly witch hunt, generated by opposing fanbases, who hated him for being such a terror to their teams. No different than we view Saban. If Saban kept this up. Kept winning the conference year in, year out for a longer duration than he already has, then our fanbases would have screamed and fussed about Book Gate. Same damn thing occurred. But not enough people cared to make an issue out of it...so the NCAA dropped it.

He had a lack of control over his team...That is documented..We don't need that at UT...Why you or anyone else would want him here is beyond me..just because he did well at OSU doesn't mean he would do well here...By the way his record against the SEC is almost as bad as Dooleys.

You just do not get it. How thick headed do you have to be? You keep implying that the NCAA has placed the ban on a coach and how dare any team consider hiring him? That's utter BS!

If they WANTED him banned, they would have put much stronger penalties in place, to ensure it. The damn report shows that it is only a 5 GAME ban....not a 5 YEAR ban. Good grief.

You keep assuming the duration of the Show Cause (5yrs) = 5yr BAN. It does not. It simply is a time frame for which they can apply only a 5 game penalty. After that, they cannot enforce the 5 GAME penalty.

Ignorant fans just keep arguing out of sheer ignorance. Sure it may look bad, but that is strictly because people rush to judgement about everything, without the benefit of having all the facts.

No, it is not. Show me the documentation. Players trading their damn jerseys for a tattoo is not a loss of control. Good grief, people. The stupidity abounds on this board.

You're talking straight out your arse, here. He lost to UF and LSU in the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. In case you haven't noticed...it is a MAJOR accomplishment just GETTING TO the BCSNC! How stupid can you be, to equate his record with Dooley's. That's some sheer dumba$$sery, right there.

He beat a good Ark team in the Sugar Bowl. Funk the vacated win....doesn't mean shiite. His team beat Ark on the field, regardless of what penalties the NCAA wants to add after the fact.

And you have no idea what the NCAA would/could do if a school hired a coach with a show cause, yet you act like you do. UT would have to go in front of the NCAA if they hired the man. That is a FACT. UT would go on probation for the entire duration of the show cause. That is a FACT. You acting like it is no big deal shows alot of ignorance on your part. Tennessee will not hire JT.

Im sorry Ohio St doesn't play nothing but National Champion SEC team every time they go to the National Championship. He was 1-2 versus the SEC in bowl games. The only win they had was over a Ryan Mallet led Arky team. It got vacated. He didn't lose control at Ohio St. Terrelle Pryor and a couple of teammates wanted to get tattoo and since College football players are broke as he.ll, he should the pants he won from beating Michigan to get it. Jim Tressel would be a great hire.

Rain man, you are straight up talking out your arse. UT WOULD NOT HAVE TO APPEAR BEFORE THE NCAA SHOW CAUSE PANEL...UNLESS THEY CAN SHOW CAUSE WHY THEY SHOULD NOT APPLY THE PENALTIES THEY OUTLINED.

If they do not want to ask for a reduction or waiver, they can simply notify the NCAA BY LETTER...jacka$$....that they will enforce the penalties the NCAA applied.

Just keep showing how little you know.

Obvious you don't either. It has nothing to do with the school just the coach.

No, they would go infront of the NCAA and they would lessen the penalty because he sat out the games in Indy. Shows that you are ignorant to the situation.

Like I said earlier, Your school doesn't get in trouble for hiring Jim Tressel. Its not like Bruce Pearl's show cause penalties.

show-cause penalty is an order saying that a coach involved in major rules violations at a university's athletic program may not be hired by any other NCAA member institutions without permission from the Infractions Committee for a set period of time. If a university seeks to hire such a coach, they must "show cause" as to why they should not be penalized for hiring him. Most schools will not even consider hiring a coach with a show-cause penalty in effect; hence the show-cause order effectively blacklists him from the collegiate coaching ranks for the duration of the penalty. The penalty is intended to follow a coach for violations that he had a role in committing.

I am sure Hart and UT will trust our future and football program on a SI article you read online by some random writer. If only they had to be 100% accurate in what they said. JT will not be hired at Tennessee. All your name calling is not going to help.

Rain Man, show me in their ruling (page 20-21) here where the NCAA, themselves, state no team can hire him? You are getting steam rolled by the facts, yet you just keep talking nonsense.

We'll hang up and listen....

I'll condense what I said above: a show-cause brings a most-unwelcome hostile visit from the NCAA. And if they want to find a violation, they most certainly will.

It's like adopting a dog covered with fleas and thinking that you won't have to deal with the exterminator pretty damn soon.

(OK, so it's not the best simile ever, but it made me happy.)
No it doesn't. THAT IS YOUR ASSUMPTION/SPECULATION. There is no factual basis for it. They don't move in. They don't camp out. If you got whacked on the bottom in grade school, I'm sure you got the message, and the teacher doesn't need to camp out behind your desk waiting to pounce on your next mistake. :loco:

That is just silliness, presuming the NCAA is looking to jackup any team that hires him.

Although your link does not work, much like your ideas.....it does not say no team can hire him. The meaning of "show cause" I posted does not say a team can not hire him either. It just says when you do....the NCAA will have something to say about your actions in doing so. Your fighting a losing cause. UT will not hire the man. It's that simple.

Nice backpedal you got going there, Rain Man.
