Every potential coach has strengths and weaknesses, even the demigod Gruden. Fisher, Gundy, Patterson, Strong, and Golden all have indications that they could win big at UT and some indications that they could also fail at UT, though I think each of these candidates would get us back to the 7-10 wins a year range. It remains to be seen if the guy who is hired will get UT back to 90s level. Fisher has SEC experience, recruits very well in the South, and has won his conference. Yes, there has been some underachieving under him but Fulmer had some teams that didn't fulfill their potential as well and Fulmer is an all time great (who on this messageboard would not be thrilled with a similar run that Fulmer had in his first ten years as coaxh?). Sometimes a change of scenery makes a huge difference like Roy Williams from KU to UNC (he has won two national titles after he couldn't win the big one at KU). Gundy wins at Oklahoma State, a perennial red headed stepchild, but his defense has been suspect and he hasn't been in the SEC before (somehow, this wasn't an issue for Sumlin). There are similar notes of praise and criticism for the other candidates. In my mind, the bottom line is that Hart has UT in the running for very desirable coaches (coaches that have demonstrated that they can win their conference championship), unlike when Dooley was hired, and any of the coaches being seriously mentioned will probably be a significant upgrade but no actually available coach (i.e., not Gruden, Bob Stoops, Saban, or Harbaugh) provide a guaranteed big winner. However, each coach would give UT a real shot at regaining our rightful place as a top ten program in the country that once or twice a decade is a real threat to win a national title.
