Joey Ayoob named starting QB for Cal

Has Cal beaten a decent opponent outside of the Pac-10 in the last 10 years??

I mean they are being hyped big time, but have they won a big game on the road????

I think in either 2002 or 2003 they went to a good Michigan State team's place and won. I thnk that same season they beat another top 25 team on the road.

But that's it. Nothing to write home about, unless of course you're a Cal fan. They like to point out that we're 0-6 at home against the last 6 top 10 teams we've played.

What do I say to that?

When did Cal become Georgia, Miami, and Florida.

freak.... you stole my thunder. I have been telling you for at least 3 weeks that I did not believe that Cal was all that. The issue is where are the Vols offensively???

I anticipate that they will be better than we expect.

I see Cal entering the qb twilight zone just where were last year.

Maybe. Even beyond UT their schedule isn't as easy as it has been. The only guaranteed cupcake is Portland State. If UT beats them then they'll be reeling going into the Minnesota game. While the Gophers will have to find some skill players, they'll have a good O-line. Their D is suspect though.

My personal wish is for UT to beat Cal and then for Cal to win them all except some low level Pac10 team they've overlooked maybe UW or WSU.

i think they are better than we expect as well. but it is the first game. they have a long trip to take. thier qb has back problems.

on paper, they are solid on d, solid at all skill positions. the reason for all the anxiety is everything you hear and read about them, there are no real questions to answer at any position. whereas, for us, we seem to have questions at almost every position.

which is why i think herbstreit hit on the head...it's not about talent, it's about chemistry. can they come together and live up to potential? everyone has heard about how "talented" the front 7 is, but they just lack experience. We've been hearing for about 3 years now about how "talented" our WR's and RB's are, but are they going to ever delivery? We all remember Erik Ainge as Frosh, and unfortunately we also remember the 2nd edition. which one was the real deal?

on paper, if this was played at a neutral site, Cal would be at least a TD favorite.

I'd be more inclined to downplay thier offensive prowess against us this year if we were returning the DL line we had last year. Everthing we have is solely based on potential and what if's. it's time to see one way or the other.

Cal has no questions? They just named their starting QB and the coach really isn't settled enough to say a guy that stank it up last year won't play significant time. Cal has a nice running game but just who did they play last year that proved they could stop the run outside of USC?... and Lynch only had 87 against them in a USC blowout.

Their defense will have two new LB's with very limited experience and 3 new DB's.

As for UT's DL, they could be better at DE maybe and are not deep at DT but Mapu was better than those guys who graduated last year as a sophomore. Along with McGlothlin, McBride, Harrell, and Ayers... I don't think UT is going to be hurting up front. Cal has the same depth issues that UT has on the DL and worse at LB and DB.

I didn't see it here, but I might have missed it so if someone already said this I apologise. The News Sentinel ran an article today saying that after Tuesday's practice Longshore was declared the starter for the Tennessee game.

Maybe Bob "Clowsen" Davie will be doing the game :w00t:

This should be a great FOOTBALL game, between two good FOOTBALL teams. What an exciting afternoon of FOOTBALL. I hope the FOOTBALL players really come out today. This should be a great FOOTBALL season.

Well, Oregon State had a decent run defense and held Cal to 75 yards. The rest of the run defenses in the PAC 10 weren't that great.

Oregon St allowed 118/game, which is decent.
The next closest was Cal at 119/gm, then USC 131, and Oregon 134. The rest of the conference was bad.

So, I think it speaks loudly about Cal's running game, and how overrated it might be. I don't know though, it's really hard to determine which came first, their good run D or bad PAC 10 D.

I thought Longshore was named the starter? I just read an article this morning in the knoxville paper that said Longshore is going to be the starter.

You say "potato." I say "potahto."

Who cares? As long as he's on his back, I don't care if it's Dan Marino taking snaps. Early, heavy pressure will play to our advantage either way. Ayoob is suspect, Longshore is nursing a back. Some heat early seems like it might pay serious dividends.

Yep, even if our D doesn't get to him, he'll be thinking about it and might make some mistakes. Jonathon Wade might have a good day returning INT's! :crossfingers:

Justin Harrell will probably be quadruple teamed. I hope the rest of our D-lineman are ready to make some plays.

I think they will. I'm interested to see how much Chavis blitzes this season and with whom now that the secondary can stick up for themselves..

When Mapu left after his sophomore year, he was probably the best DT on the team. I HOPE they double team Harrell.
