Joey Halzle: Are you Listening?

I used to think it was venting, but no, many posters here actually believe that players, coaches, Danny White, recruits, and opposing coaches waste time scouring message boards because they care about how mostly middle-aged men feel about them.

A couple of weeks ago there was a poster who tried to convince everyone that opposing coaches are printing our gripes and bringing them on recruiting visits.
The lulz never stop on this board

Man, it's a crime that you aren't an OC somewhere in the NFL with such knowledge and insight. Can't believe some head coach hasn't snapped you up by now.
Would love to find someone/anyone who can agree with the playcalling on our second series!

I wanted to puke on our second series of the game. We marched 94 beautiful yards on short, quick passes and runs, both up the middle and around the ends. It was a great way for our Offense to start the game - and it was right from last year's script that made us the quickest and most prolific scoring machine in college football.

Our D did a very admirable job in making the cocks punt after only one first down on their first possession. Kudos to them. Then, on the second cocks series, we bent but didn't break as USC kicked a FG.

UT has tremendous momentum at this point. 2 stops by our D and a 94 yard drive from our O.

Joey, it is your JOB to keep this momentum going. Do what we do best, run the ball and quick passes. The formula is tatoed on your forehead for God's sake. Just do it and don't give the cocks the chance to steal our valuable momentum.

But NOOOoooooOOOOoooOooOOOOoooOoOOOOOoooOooooOOOOOOOOooooooooOOOO!!!! You muck it up royally and forget what your #1 job in life is. You drop Milton back on first down and he almost throws a pick six. I watched this series several times this morning and surprised I am not yaking on my keyboard. We started from our 24 yard line and need 10 yards to move the chain. We have 3 of the countries BEST running backs and you call a play to have our QB drop back (and I am a big Joe Milton fan mind you, but we need to move the chains, first and foremost). I don't blame Milton for almost getting picked after running to his left due to pressure but rather, why in heavens name didn't you recall that a few minutes ago, we ran the ball up and down their asses??

Second down is a predictable draw for zero yards. Ho hum, is your name Randy freaking Sanders?? Gee whiz, let's keep the bad guys honest.....

So now you have put your offense in a precarious position of 3rd and long from deep in our own territory on just our SECOND possession. So what play do you call? Joe dropping back. And what does Joe do (kudos to O line for giving him time)? He throws into coverage for an interception. GONE is every ounce of mojo and momentum we had and you personally served it up on a silver platter to the cocks.

Your horrendous play calling did not net us ONE YARD. And just curious, you are the same play caller (to my knowledge), that mucked it up royally in the swamp last week, right?

For the love of God and UT football, please do not forget our team's most successful offensive weapon, and that is moving the chains. Give Joe some time before you have him drop back twice out of 3 downs in the first quarter deep in our own territory. And when you go to bed at night, repeat this: Small, Sampson & Wright. Small, Sampson & Wright....

As for the Defense and Mr. Banks - y'all did GREAT! Was so nice to see us hold on 3rd and 4th downs and to pursue whomever had the ball w tenacity, let alone 6 count' em SACKS!! And who honestly felt that we would hold Rattlersnake to less than 200 yards????

If anyone feels they need to label me as a NegaVol for sharing my opinion on some IMO horrible play calling, that is fine but, I am hoping that this still is a site to come and vent, praise and sometimes, point out the obvious. It was a great victory for the Vols and this morning I am consumed w grief for Bru - as I strongly felt he is/was a no doubt second rounder next year. God be with you Bru - and thank you for being a VFL.

When the opposing defense changes to stop what we've been doing successfully, we switch to what their defense is now allowing. Halzle's not going away from what's been successful, but switching to what should be successful against the new defensive alignment or personnel.

I suspect that when we have a bad series of downs, it's lack of execution, and from what the coaches and players say, it's usually a only one person's breakdown that negates a play.

It takes all 11 to run a play successfully. This is college football, and we are playing a lot of younger players. Which means we should improve every week.

Let’s see…score 41 points in an SEC game…win by 21…and get skewered over one possession on VolNation.

Yep, all is normal.

Problem is Hooker hangover. For some got awful reason Hype and Haze continue to play only Milton. HE cannot execute this offense fast enough. Slow to read the play, can't make a read and change a play at the line, - and has a bad tendency to stare down his receivers. We are running into bigger better stronger teams in the weeks ahead. They will all stack the box and dare Millton to throw the ball. JUST. LIKE. Florida. Milton not going to beat anybody with his accuracy. Hard to believe we don't have a more accurate QB on the bench. He frustrates the hell out of me. Second interception I heard someone say that the reciever should have fought harder for the ball, DANG ball was underthrown !!! Receiver had 0 chance at that ball. B A D T H R O W, again- Before everybody starts pumping their chest about SC, they are a B A D team.

I thought overall the play calling was better and they ran the ball more, which is where the success has been all season.

Yes, because if you watched the game, you had the same impression I did after the second series. I just spent the time spelling it out. We cannot afford to have poor play calling lose the momentum against teams superior to the cocks.

And hey, if anyone on VN goes back and watches the second series and is happy with the plays that were called, then that is your right. We were very lucky that our great D held and all the momentum was not loss. GoVols!

Lighten up Francis.
OK, I have been a UT fan since the 60s. I have seen bad coaching squander sooo many talented UT teams but hey, I haven't witnessed anything each of you on here didn't also see. It's disheartening to know we have the players on the field to beat most teams but, do not live up to our potential. For example, I really liked Fulmer as a coach but Randy Sanders predictable and boring play calling made me furious. Butch could recruit, but couldn't coach, and no sense mentioning all the others that all of us have painfully lived through. And yes, I take UT Football seriously and will never lighten up or apologize.

My personal philosophy, which will get torpedoed, shelled and bombed on here, is simple: First Downs, not Touchdowns. If our offense, and in particular, the people calling in our plays, focus on getting 10 yards every 3 plays, then a LOT of good things happen:

1. We keep our Defense on the bench resting
2. We keep our opponents on the bench and not scoring
3. We control the clock (incomplete passes permit defensive substitutions and more time in between each play - allowing the D to rest)
4. We will score touchdowns, all the touchdowns we need

What our play callers did on our second series this weekend was to TOTALLY forget what we did on our first successful drive - and that was running the ball and short passes. We ran three horrible plays: Almost an interception, a run for no yards and an interception. Where the HELL was the run or short pass on first down to get at least 5 yards and not put the O in a precarious position? But noooo, the play callers got greedy and cocky and went away from our #1 most successful offensive weapon, and this is moving the ball, and moving it quickly. I love drop back passing but hey, let's get a comfortable lead and just pound the pigskin down the field.

Sorry if my thoughts on lousy play calling are found to be offensive by anyone on this fine site. I am a Vol damn it, and I like winning!!!

Nah dude your thoughts are good here. They offense has been off all year. Even when we’re scoring it’s hard. Personally I think it’s execution, but could be playcalling. Just seems like to me we’ve seen heupel be a better play caller but we’ve never seen Joe be a better qb than what we’re getting. 24/7 and all these sites hyped Joe up all off season. If anything I’m mad at them for reporting our receivers could get separation and joe was accurate because I haven’t seen much of it since the season started. Thank good for our rbs and dline.
