John Adams

You can seriously read what is written here and not realize he has a cult following?

Adams is not a fan; he has to look at things differently. He isn't supposed to play to the sycophants.
He's also not a movie critic or a CNN/MSNBC reporter at the Libertarian Party convention.

UGA has a homer press. UF has a homer press with some exceptions. Bama has a VERY homer press. USCe even has a homer press and you know if they aren't then they're Clemson fans. Mizzou has a homer press. Washington has a homer press.

UT's K'ville press is the most cynically critical of their hometown program of any I have seen.

I believe Adams is also an LSU grad who tends to have an ax to grind with UT in general for some reason.

This is bogus.

How much sunshine can you pump during three losing seasons that include a loss to Kentucky (with a wr at qb), a blowout loss to Vandy, and a shootout against Troy (allowing the most yards by a Tennessee team ever)?

The "he would find the negative in a 51-0 win over bama" argument doesn't hold water until you give him something positive to work with.

He did pick Tennessee to beat Florida in his column that week.

It's not about sunshine pumping. I could give two sh*ts whether he pumps it or not. It's his condescending and generally arrogant for no good reason attitude that rubs people the wrong way. Mike Strange can be critical, but he's not a jack*ss like Adams and is twice the writer Adams ever will be.

Adams is to the KNS what David Climer is to the Tennessean. Two crotchety old farts that are in the twilight of their careers that could care less how many people they alienate. The paper they write for will be out of business very soon unless it changes its business model and they could really care less about the younger writers because they'll be in retirement. If any journalist starting out has any sense, they wouldn't be writing for either of those tabloids. They are on life support and Adams and Climer could care less.

1,426.38% CORRECT ON ALL COUNTS. Adams and Climer are two peas in one pod. Both possess but one arrow in their respective journalistic quivers, an endless supply of sarcasm.

Qualifying postscript: This is now the Tennessee fan, as opposed to the academic, speaking. Fans are entitled to be as partisan as they wish.

Kudos on all fronts. When you listened to John Ward, you expected to hear a Tennessee partisan. The same holds true of, for example, Larry Munson as a Georgia broadcaster. On a national network, however, you have the right to expect professional objectivity, indeed strict neutrality. Unfortunately, it is painfully apparent that we often don't get that in television commentators.

The same expectations are not unreasonable with regard to print journalists. If you can't be remotely supportive of the hand that feeds you, at least exercise true objectivity and don't go consistently out of your way to bash the program at every opportunity. And, for the record, I checked and Adams is most definitely an LSU grad. He seems to have a greater infatuation with Spurrier, however.

Adams is like the trolls on here. They survive off the commentors. If we didn't respond to his articles or trolls posts they would soon both disappear, but we all feel that we have some quip to put them in their place. Meanwhile we're just feeding them. I'm guilty.

reading his columns from time to time, he is sarcastic by nature.

so, yeah, it rubs people the wrong way because it feels like someone is adding salt to the wound.

i don't see it that way, but understand if others do.

i have written comments from time to time where people think i am taking a shot and i really am not.

but, since 2008, if you comment honestly about what has taken place for tennessee on the field, it's not going to be pleasant.

the same thing will happen during this offseason when tennnessee is picked to finish 4th or 5th in the sec east and doesn't place many players on a preseason all sec list.

then, it will be espn hates us, the sec hates us, the media hates us, etc, etc, etc

I think John Adams just reports the facts as he sees them and lets face it, the last few years there have been more negetive facts than positive around here. There is a pretty large part of the fan base that is very unhappy with the way things have gone. I like it when a reporter asks the tuff questions. It keeps everyone accountable.

I was in Walgreens the other day and a Knoxville News Sentinal guy was in there trying to sign people up. He asked me and I said "if you get rid of John Adams I'd think about it." He then told me, "you don't know how many times I've heard that today." .. I think his comment in the presser about the players clapping was really smarta$$ and most of his colums are only negative.. I'm just wondering, how does he stay around?? Does the news sentinal go for "The guy people love to hate?"

Before you go into, "He posts facts and the truth and people don't like it" bull .. it's not that he posts truth, he finds the bad parts of every situation. Anyways, just trying to talk about something other than the "3 star terrible, worst, never going to play players" that CBJ is recruiting according to some.. because that gets annoying to read.

Excellent post. I long ago quit reading his crap. Once I exchanged a few emails with Adams' boss and got the most feeble pathetic lame excuses like "Adams is entitled to his opinion too" which of course is not the issue at all.

So, yes, I think it is an example of yellow journalism where they try to sell product by riling people up. I don't go there. I am so glad all my relatives have dropped their subscriptions too to that shameless rag of a paper.

How long have you been reading Adams' material? If you honestly believe that sarcasm is utilized by Adams only on an occasional basis, then I would say that you are being overly kind to him. That overriding characteristic of his literary style has been there going all the way back to the Manning era; he simply has had a lot more material to work with in recent years that conforms to his personal agenda.

Tennessee fans dislike Adams because of his literary style, not because of the content of his writing. Someone contrasted the work of Mike Strange previously. Strange accomplishes the same goal of professionally objective criticism without the endlessly abrasive style that Adams employs. If you can't see that, I'm sorry; we will simply agree to profoundly disagree.

Evidence of a cult following? I think not. You simply have reaffirmation of the original poster's statement when he was asked about subscribing to the News Sentinel: I said "if you get rid of John Adams I'd think about it." He then told me, "you don't know how many times I've heard that today."

I grew up in Maryville, but live around 400 miles away now. Have gotten newly motivated with the CBJ hire, and went out and downloaded the SportsAnimal app so I could listen to local talk radio on my iphone.

So remember, I've been away for a while and besides the radio team that calls the games, I do not know the local personalities at all. I turn the app on running errands Friday morning and the first show I turn on I am thinking "who is that country-bumpkin moron and why am I listening to this show?" Well, as I'm sure you've guessed by now, it was John Adams and Vince or Vance somebody. I've been away from Knoxville going on 15 years now and am right there with you. Cannot believe that guy still has a job.

He was that way all through the salad years too lizard. Go back to the scummy swamp and quit telling us how to feel about a$$holes like Adams. For you other jagoofs in here claiming to be Vols and calling others "homers", what does it mean to be a "hometeam" fan? John Adams is a prick has always been a prick, and Bama "homers"would have run him out of the state his first week on the job. Screw Adams we get enough "realism" from everybody else in the country. I have never understood why some of you like this crap. Must be your masochistic tendencies coming out.

Everything said here in this post is absolute, unequivical truth. No other SEC teams fans would put up with his ***t.

No there should not be a positive UT slant to his columns. I don't care how it's done other places. If he's too negative for you, don't read him. Sentinel is in trouble, anyway.

Read Utsports.com if you want PR.

John Adams still has a job here because there are just as many people who love what he writes as there are who hate it. You can see that by reading the posts on this board everyday. Adams actually has a good feel for the pulse of the fans, and writes whatever he thinks will hit a nerve. Everytime someone writes in to complain to the editor, it does one thing..it proves that people are reading, which in turn keeps the KNS numbers up, which sells advertising, and so on. So don't look for anything to change for a while,

Because I don't expect Adams to be overtly positive in the face of overwhelming negative results?

You can tell it like it is, or you can sugarcoat it. You need to borrow a cup or two?

I don't mind writers like Mike Strange. He does a good job. Adams is a prick with an agenda. If you can't see that after all these years ...well obtuse is a word that comes to mind. A**holes like him would be run off in any other SEC state. Why we put up with this "realism" BS is beyond me. Adams is not, and never has been about realism. and for you guys who said he started this when Fulmer was fired that is crap. He has been this way from the start, it was just harder to find ammunition when we were winning 10 games every year.

Newspapers will be obsolete in less than 10 years anyway. All you have to do is wait it out. When I was in K town there were 2 daily papers. Now one and very soon none. Twitter will rule in the new generation
