To an extent, Memphis has already come out of this well. Even if John leaves, it's obvious the money is there to hire a coach of national repute. If Memphis somehow keeps him, and wins this dramatic, head-to-head bidding war with "the Notre Dame of college basketball," the status of the Tiger program is immediately elevated to an all-time high.
Reports yesterday said the deal was 6 Years/40 Million.
Maybe the reporters pulled the figure out of their ass but not many questioned it because we all know that type of figure is possible.
With those figures being thrown around according to sources yesterday I dont think its not possible if it comes to that point.Donovan is reportedly in the 3.5 annual range...Bill Self is at around 3 per year. I find it hard to believe that UK or Memphis is going to give Cal a deal that pays him more than double what the past 2 national champs are earning. I don't doubt that Cal may ink a deal that makes him the highest paid coach in the country, but 7mil per? That's not being competitive...that's just being stupid.
Doug Gottlieb seems to think that Cal has made up his mind to go to Kentucky, but is stalling in hopes that he can force Anderson to take the Georgia job or stay at Missouri...in turn securing Barbee the Memphis job...in turn securing the UTEP job for Steve Roccaforte.
Roc hasn't done enough at Lamar to warrant getting the UTEP job. If UTEP needs a coach, I'm pretty sure where their first phone call goes.Doug Gottlieb seems to think that Cal has made up his mind to go to Kentucky, but is stalling in hopes that he can force Anderson to take the Georgia job or stay at Missouri...in turn securing Barbee the Memphis job...in turn securing the UTEP job for Steve Roccaforte.
I dont think so either.I like Tony B. but im not sure that is going to work for the Memphis fan base.
