Anyone else excited about John's new CD? I've only heard two songs, "Who Says" and Heartbreak Warfare." Sounds like he's going to have a new sound on this CD, but I'm pretty excited for it.

first off, are you a guy or a girl?

If you think it's girly to listen to John Mayer, then you really don't know what you're talking about.
Sure, his songs on pop radio stations are a little sappy, but the majority of his music is very Eric Clapton-like. John Mayer is easily as good of a guitar player as Clapton...yeah I said it.
Give the John Mayer Trio a listen. He's a brilliant musician.

Wow. You guys seem to care a lot about what others think. I bet you consider whether or not other people find your musical selections cool before buying them. Am I right?
Music is music. It affects different people in different ways. I, for one, really enjoy listening to talented musicians wail away on their instruments. That's why I respect John Mayer. He might be on Us Weekly once in a while, but he is also one of the best guitar players I've seen since Steve Howe.
Even Creed was once good. I just didn't like when they went overly commercial with their stuff. But still, someone probably dug that stuff. Why would you ever make fun of what kind of music someone likes? Are we back in the 7th grade??
I am positive that everyone reading this has someone that they have liked who could easily be made fun of. Still, that's ridiculous, because for whatever reason, you dug that artist at some point.
I know you guys are just kidding around, it's just always confused me why someone would make fun of another person's musical preference. I don't get that.
Also, I've met John Mayer and interviewed him (when I was in radio), and he was a cool guy. We chatted about the Grammys, as he was set to play at them the following week, and then he hit on my wife (he thought she was a random listener, and not backstage because her husband was the DJ).
Kind of dorky, but most artistic folks are a little bit.

As a guitar player and avid musician, I'll affirm that JM is an INCREDIBLE guitarist. He continues to evolve, and his picking techniques on Continuum are nearly impossible to play. I know that some may knock him for his trend toward "radio-friendly" songs, but you can't deny his skills and songwriting abilities.

Looking forward to his new release...and from what I've heard, the challenge of learning from his mastery.

I also play guitar and have an immense amount of respect for John Mayer. When he first came out I thought he was the biggest douche on the planet, but then I bought Continuum and was blown away by his writing and playing.

Whoever it was that compared him to Clapton was dead on, he reminds me so much of Clapton back in the day.

Lots of folks will call you a queer or what not for listening to him but his last 2 albums have encapsulated my life.

Regret not seeing him 3 years ago at The Tennessee Theater.

I personally think guys who like music for music, regardless of whether or not they think it's "sissy" or whatever else you guys think, is amazing. So tip of the hat to you boys who like music because of what you hear not because of what others think! Oh and by the way...any guy who wants to pick me up some Panera Bread is GREAT in my book! ;)

He actually covers a Cream song on this album. Along with that, he does a Bruce Springsteen song too. That's my favorite from the album. I also like one called Edge of Desire.

No one is easily as good as Clapton. That's ridiculous.

Maybe so. But, as a guitarist, I'll tell you that I can play Clapton songs with less effort than it takes to learn Mayer. It's a little unfortunate that he gets lumped into "sissy music" by people who really don't have a clue what they are talking about. He's a great songwriter and has taken a fantastic blues background and created his own picking and fingering style.

I listen to a lot of heavy stuff, alt-rock, and americana. My view on music: if it's GOOD, then I don't really care what genre it belongs to or if it's on the radio.

Point is: there is a lot of crap out there that can be ridiculed. John Mayer is far from that.

Thank you. Are Mayer's lyrics a little iffy in this album, to an extent yes. This isn't his best guitar work, but it'd be hard to follow up his last album. I like Edge of Desire, Crossroads, and Perfectly Lonely on this new one.

Wrong. Despite what people may want to believe Clapton is human. Duane Allman and Stevie Ray Vaughan were both better. And I love Clapton.

They might have been better, but it's debatable. Clapton is in the discussion for top dog. Thus, no one is "easily" better.

He got famous playing "sissy music". Sort of sucks for him, but not really considering I'm sure he made a fortune doing it. You won't hear me saying he isn't talented.

Counterpoint: he has drawn a popular following based upon a few "lighter" radio hits. If that gets people into arenas and opens their eyes and ears to the virtuosity of his playing and songwriting...props for the work. There are worse things to be than ridiculously talented AND rich. Many, many fantastic guitarists have never had much exposure due to a lack of popularity of their style.
