Agreed, his music has plenty of emotion, it's more of a complex emotion...some people prefer the more juvenile approach...to each their own.
Not me, because its boring and has no emotion.

Personality shouldn't matter but it works it's way in. Every time I've heard the guy talk I've thought d-bag. It shouldn't detract from his music but for me it does. Plus, most of what I've heard from the guy I don't like but a lot of what I like other people don't - no biggie. I see that people who like him also tend to like Dave Matthews. That's another act I don't care for even though I recognize the talent. I don't see him as being as pretentious as Mayer but in the end who cares what I think!
You're giving him WAY to much credit here. It's the same thing with Clapton. They both can play, I just don't feel anything. Mayer is just more theatrical about it.
His music deals with complex issues that most all of us go through, now he doesn't have the raw emotion an artist like SRV had, his music makes you think, thus creating emotion.
Well for me his music does anyway, lot of his songs I can relate to...to each their own.
You may not like who he is, or his voice, but nobody should doubt his song writing ability, his ability on a guitar or his gift for melody.
Have you built a statue in his honor yet? I've heard his songs and they don't do anything for me. Most of them are pretty straightforward. The guy can play a mean technical guitar but to say that you can't doubt any of his ability is absurd. There are very few people in music history that fall into that category.
Tier 1: Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Chuck Berry, Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Eddie Van Halen, and Jimmy Page.
Tier 2: Everyone else.
Mayer is closer to tier 1 than tier 2.
His future music obviously will determine if he'll be in the same breath as the legends.
