John Mayer- Battle Studies

John Mayer might be as good as Eric Clapton, I really don't know. What I do know is that they are both boring as hell. They might be technically proficient as a guitar players but where is the emotion? It all sounds so soulless.

Also correct me if I'm wrong doesn't he really divide up his recordings? Pop music that mostly appeals to girls on one side but hardcore blues guy under the John Mayer Trio on the other? If he does that, its pretty much the lamest thing ever.

Battle Studies doesn't have a "girl" friendly song on it IMO...There is plenty of emotion in both of their catalogs, nothing that is comparable to say...SRV, but not many people played with that type of emotion.

His early career had a few songs that were manufactured to to appeal to an audience. That is how the music business goes though, he has really progressed as a songwriter and a musician.

i've gotta admit, I hated this album from the jump...but it's growing on me now. I still hate the goodbye song. I think guitarists really appreciate JM, I know that why georgia why and 3x5 really blew me away the first time that I heard them and then learned to play them. I saw him in concert just after room for squares came out and he played some great srv stuff...I'd be curious to know if he still does that.

He may be quite talented but he's annoyingly full of himself. I heard some snippets of his apology for saying the "n" word in an interview and it was the biggest steaming pile of self importance I've heard in a while.

I couldn't agree more. What an idiot. Check out some of his quotes. Who the hell talks like that?

You obviously have never heard his stand-up...the guy is different, just cause he is famous doesn't mean he shouldn't be allowed to be himself, seems as though he has no filter...I like that...can't tell me you haven't said something along the same lines as what he said...we all have.

Dude, what someone says in private and what they say in a interview are two different things and to act like they are not is ignorant.

I'm not saying that he can't say what he wants to say but if you have to spend everyday after an interview apologizing and defending yourself, then you know he did something wrong. He knows he did something wrong. The guy has a history of giving awful, self centered interviews where he tries to say something "deep" and he ends up sounding like a douche-bag. (because he is)

But you know, you are right about one thing, not a day goes by that I don't say something as ridiculous as this,

"My d*** is sort of like a white supremacist. I've got a Benetton heart and a f*****' David Duke c***. I'm going to start dating separately from my d***.":)

If that was Dooley or Pearl we would have endless threads about how they are a disgrace to the university and must be fired.

We live in a PC world, everybody is so touchy these days...freedom of speech is a beautiful thing, I'm not defending anything he said, I'm just defending his right to.

Personality shouldn't matter but it works it's way in. Every time I've heard the guy talk I've thought d-bag. It shouldn't detract from his music but for me it does. Plus, most of what I've heard from the guy I don't like but a lot of what I like other people don't - no biggie. I see that people who like him also tend to like Dave Matthews. That's another act I don't care for even though I recognize the talent. I don't see him as being as pretentious as Mayer but in the end who cares what I think!

Most famous people are pretentious. I hated Mayer when he first came out...a drunken friend pleaded that I give him a listen and gave me 2 of his albums.

Some of his earlier work has a little too much "bubble gum" for me...but his last 2 albums have pretty much abandoned the songs written just for radio play.

The guy is an amazing musician, pretentious or not.

And what were the activities that followed, after this "drunken friend" pleaded with you to listen to Mayer? I'm starting to worry about you sir....

Don't be a victim.

my fiancee just won front row and backstage passes to his show here in Denver tonight. needless to say, I won't be going with her.

well, she already has a friend of hers going with her. I immediately withdrew my name from contention when she said she won the tickets. she didn't know until the radio station had a drawing today that she actually got the backstage passes.

Yeah, what kind of person would want to see one of the best guitarists around in person?

He's generally a pompous ass, but that's why I don't watch Entertainment Tonight or read People and leave that to the other gender.

He's a solid performer and I'd rather watch/listen to his brand of "pop" than, for example, someone singing a song called "Blah Blah Blah."
