I'd like to be proven wrong. Although Petrino might be so beyond-the-pale despicable that he's not a good test case. Would like to have seen the results in a "Should UTK fire Bruce Pearl?" or "Should UTK admit Eddrick Lofton?" poll broken out like that.

Believe me, this is not an opinion I started out with before I discovered the fabulous world of Vol message boards. But once you've been called a chump and a loser a few dozen times for worrying about academics/ethics issues, you notice a pattern.

Maybe the big cleavage is over academics and I'm mistaken to extrapolate it to ethics. I'm basing that opinion mostly on the Bruce Pearl argument. On this board at least, it seemed pretty clearly divided between alums on one side and non-alums who just want to win on the other.

I grew up a fan locally and went to school there...and I'm still ok with hiring Petrino if you cant get Gruden or Pete Carrol or somebody of that calibur.

I guess you missed the part that I HAVE A DEGREE FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE...I AM NOT JUST A CLETUS SIDEWALK ALUM

If we take Petrino and he wins a NC within 3 years, these same people would be singing his praises about how he's a changed man.

If Petrino goes to Auburn and we miss out on Gruden and we're either 1. Stuck with Dooley or 2. Replacing Dooley with someone like Smart, and Petrino wins big at Auburn, these same people will be saying we should have taken Petrino.

If we miss on Gruden, I'd happily take Petrino, and as long as he wins, I'd be a happy fan. We need a winner

I agree but apparently he did something at Louisville that could change my mind. No one seems to want to address what he did so until them I am in his corner. I remember him leaving Louisville in better shape than it was when he came.

I agree..I will never buy a Louisville ticket or apparel again until jurich and pitino are gone. Unfortunately pitino signed a contract extension to keep him around for ten years. That scumbag is no better than Petrino.

Whether you've got a PhD or a GED from a Crackerjack box, in my mind, you literally have to suspend common sense to hire this guy. How can you want your school slightly associated with anybody that stupid who left his last employer in a complete mess?

I used to respect Pitino as a coach, until I heard the whole waitress scandal and what he did while his assistants "allegedly" were on lookout. Now I just see him as a creep.

Amazing how all the morally pure, bible totin, self-rightous, hypocritical do gooders on this thread are so quick to judge another human.

The guy isnt running for president or pastor of your church. He is a football coach. A football coach is hired and paid to win football games period!!!

Bigtime college football is a business. Nothing but a business.

When you win, you make money.

When you lose you dont make money, or atleast not enough to sustain all that we as UT fans claim to be what sets us apart from others in our conference.

Dave Hart is not an Athletic Director,he is a business person, a general manager, a CEO. His job is to hire personell who can make the final scoreboard on a fall Saturday show more points than the opponents at the end of a game.

If you dont like the fact that winning supercedes all else in the SEC football, then I suggest you petition the powers that be to move us into another conference. A conference where winning is not everything.

I will agree with those that say its is sad that we might compromise our integrity just to win some extra games. It shouldnt have to be that way. But it is that way. Winning matters and its all that matters.

Dooley is widely held in high regard as a smart, morally solid, ethical family man. However, many if not most are ready for him to be run out of town on a rail.

Why is this??

He didnt WIN enough. Its all about winning. If he was winning, all would be just fine.

If I own a major company, a company that has revenue in the hundreds of millions just like the UTAD does, I want a guy that delievers results, period. I could care less who he is or what he has done. As long as he isnt being fraudulant or doing things illegal then I want him even if his name is Lucifer and he has red horns protruding from his forehead.


Make a choice, you want a proven winner? If if the only proven winner is Petrino....
Or are you willing to take on another 3-4 year experiment on an up and commer who goes to church every Sunday morning?

I disagree. He's more than a football coach, he's a representative of the ACADEMIC University. People think football is bigger than school, and that's inaccurate.

The HC is employed by an academic institution, however his job is to coach football. Nothing but coach football, win games and keep his players in line.

His job is to coach football, graduate his players, stay compliant with the NCAA, and not embarrass the University. Petrino's reputation is so bad that he embarrasses the University the second you hire him. And his history is such that he's a crummy risk to embarrass the University further after that. Hiring Petrino is like marrying a woman who's already divorced two husbands and killed a third.
