just got off the phone with some tech buddies..

on Giles: very athletic but lacks size and speed.. great hands

So here is the story why he left.. (we don't want him)

1st spring depth chart comes out and he is 2nd team.. throws a fit and tells team he is transferring.. kid has no dog in him.. has never had to really compete for anything.. looks good on the field but from the convo I just had I don't think we want him.. Tech says we don't want him..

Supposedly the coaches kept pushing him to work harder and he folded.. couldn't hack it...

:good!:

He'll sit out this Fall and play next year. Just like having a juco WR but he's proven already on this level. Win-win
it's a curious move. TTech is one of the premier schools to showcase your abilities as a receiver. guess he saw the writing on the wall with Mahomes gone and Kliff possibly being on the hot seat without a star QB? I find it hard to believe that another TTech WR would surpass him on the depth chart. they've got some good receivers, but I dont think they're as talented as him.

if it came down to this kid or a talented 4 year WR like camron johnson who would you pick?

Isn't their next QB on a lot of "watch lists" for next year?

Not sure. See the jeremy johnson situation for why preseason watch lists shouldnt be taken seriously.

I havent payed close enough attention to TTU to know what their backups look like, but I would expect a considerable drop off in production between the new QB and Mahomes. Mahomes was Kliff's most complete QB to date IMO - that includes Mayfield, Manziel, Webb and Keenum.

Thing is we KNOW this kid will produce at the D1 level. That's the biggest difference between him and any other WR prospect.

Per Hubbs

While Texas Tech transfer Jonathan Giles mentioned Tennessee as one of 10 potential destinations, the Vols are not pursuing the Red Raiders’ leading receiver last season. Giles must sit out the 2017 campaign, and the Vols feel confident in what they have at the slot receiver position — both currently on campus and potential additions in the next two recruiting classes.

Sometimes a change of scenery is all that is needed. Wherever he goes, he will have a year to get his head on straight. If he is a good athlete, but does not have elite speed, he can still be a very solid SEC WR. That is, of course, given that he decides to work hard and to buy into what the coaches are telling him.

Edit: I had not read the Hubbs quote above. Moving on.
