Jordan Mathews, Ricky Gibson III - where are they?

It’s just that number 5 has demonstrated bad tackling for a long time. And talking crap after getting beat gets old for fans to watch. I am well aware he not the only problem but he has been the most consistent with bad habits in tackling. GBO
I agree that he has demonstrated bad tackling in the past. It looked like he wasn't even anticipating being involved in the tackle on the play which is unacceptable for an upperclassman. He has his problems, but he is not solely responsible for our failure on this play.

So David Leaverton should have never made a touchdown saving tackle in 98 against Florida State and just said “Im the punter it’s not my job to tackle” ?
Where did I say it was not Hadden's responsibility to make a tackle? Sheesh. People are being way too hard on Hadden just because he was the last line of the defense to show up to the party. Etienne should have never made it past our linebackers or safety. Period. Hadden should have anticipated being in on the tackle, but he got caught watching instead.

Everything you said may be true, so yes there’s plenty to not like on that play,

But fact is it did make it to Hadden and what he did was an epic failure. No excuse for a senior. Sit his a$$ and let a freshman play
I agree that it is ridiculous that he got caught watching instead of planning the tackle in pursuit. He just needs to get his a** kicked in with some heavy contact and pursuit drills.

Thought Gibson played later in Florida game?
Apparently I missed that. Haven’t had a chance to rewatch the game yet. Hope he played well. We desperately need it. I’ll shout it from the rooftops for the next few months: we lose every starter and 8(!) players from our two-deep in the secondary after this season - including our top 4 corners.

But he did, so then it falls to Hadden sacrifice himself, wrap him up and tackle him, not shoulder bump him. Unacceptable effort regardless of what happened before the RB got to Hadden.
Hadden got caught watching the play instead of pursuing. BS play for a senior, but nobody is talking about how our linebackers and safety failed to make the play. DL should have also caused Etienne more trouble at the LOS.

Because they appeared to actually try.. Hadden appeared to forget he was playing football.

Don’t disagree with that.

He also said today that he told Ricky we need him to take that next step that we need him out there. Jordan Matthews is another one that was highly touted and has tons of potential. The quicker they can step up the better. Both have major speed and talent. On a side note not having Slaughter and Mincey really hurt Saturday. Slaughter is probably our best tackler in the secondary and Mincey is one of our better O-Lineman. GBO
Yeah. I honestly thought it was odd that he didn't mention Matthews and that Gibson has apparently worked ahead of him to this point. Both have talent but it appears that the "lower rated" guy has ahead in development.

IMO, Slaughter is UT's best DB period. If there is a silver lining, other guys played more and put their work on film. Maybe that will enable them to take snaps from Hadden. Hadden is obviously a physically gifted guy but he's coming up short too often.

Mincey is a mystery to me. I thought they would experiment and then eventually move him to start at RT. I'm not sure what to think now and especially with his off field idiocy.

I had JM penciled in as a day 1 starter. Why haven’t they seen the field?

after two plus years, it is very obvious this staff (from HC on down) believe strongly in playing experience.... doesn't mean its 100% experience but wherever possible, they trust the older guys over the younger guys. I would be surprised if you see anything different from a Heuple staff anytime in the future. IMO

I agree with that. Heck, Walker took out 2 of our own men and he had a great angle to make tackle. That one is a head scratcher. But I still can’t get over that our last line of defense acted like he didn’t have any arms on the play. Our defense play as a whole was poor the first half. It was actually much better in the second half. Still can’t get over us not being disciplined enough not to jump on 4th down in their own territory. We were fixing to get the ball back probably in good field position with 6 minutes left down by 13. Instead we gave them the ball another 2 minutes and pretty much killed any chances we had at that point. GBO

Both of them have played, Gibson has played in every game I am pretty sure. Matthews has played in 3 I think. They will be good players, despite what most think it takes a little time for even the best of high school players to adjust. Only a very few make a big impact 1 year from the jump. It happens but not very often. We have improved from the Florida game, that’s what teams with good coaches and players do. Football isn’t easy, it is easy for folks to criticize from the stands and the TV. Players have good and bad games, bumps and bruises play a factor in the long haul. I just expect effort and I feel ever since the Florida game our effort and overall play is improving. GBO!
