Josh Dobbs: play-by-play vs Alabama (video)

Watching it again, I think Dobbs is much more accurate with his passing. looked like 1 bad throw out of 12 for 92% accuracy. Given the situation not to shabby. Throw in several bad drops and a couple of good D plays, one of which could have been PI (like they would call PI).
Good running ability too (please SLIDE) so it seems we "may" have a good QB on our hands although too early to be sure.

Here is your chance Mr Dobbs, you can DO IT! Stay calm, make good decisions, don't try to do to much, and don't make any huge mistakes! And did I mention please slide? We have enough injured QB's!!

.

I absolutely agree. There was really only one bad pass out of the 12(not including the tipped pass). The rest were right there and against lesser opponents our WRs will have the separation to make the catch on most of those.

Edit to add: What I also like is how he keep his eyes in the center of the field when he gets the ball then turns to pass rather than eyeing the target the entire time. This keep the safeties at home.

I love this kid's arm. He throws a beautiful ball. If he can throw like this a freshman, the future is bright. As he develops and gets stronger, he's going to have an absolute cannon.

Hopefully he can shorten his stroke a little bit and get the release quicker, but other than that, he looks great. He appears VERY athletic.

1:05- Nice accurate throw, bad drop by Johnson
1:30- Nice catch by North. Throw wasn't completely on target, but it was in North's range.
1:55- The best throw I've seen from a QB on our team this year. Perfect placement and touch off the rollout.
2:10- Tipped at the line
2:38- Thread the needle to North. Should've been a catch, but was perfectly defended. The angle here isn't the best, but on the unposted replay you could see it hit North on target.
3:35- Perfectly executed rollout and check down to the open receiver. Ball well thrown for completion.
4:20- Incompletion to North in the end zone. Ball was placed where only our reciever could haul it in. Well thrown, maybe a tad early, but just a nice defensive play to break it up.
4:30- Completed pass on 4th down conversion
5:00- Deep throw that was well placed. No excuse for not catching that one.
5:35- perfectly thrown pass. Another drop for Smith.
6:00- Well executed screen.
6:35- Looks like it was tipped at the line.

Thank Freak!

I admit that after the circus run in the 2nd quarter that reminded me of the Ark punt return from 2011 I upped the vodka consumption considerbly. Needless to say, my focus wasn't as sharp for the 2nd half....being down 35-0 didn't help.

The kid has an arm. One pass was about 50 yards. The others had plenty of zip and seemed on target.

Thanks and kudos. I didn't think the Bear would return from the grave and follow up with that. Thanks for doing it.

two observations

Vern said "exactly" 20 times

Vern and Gary make more sense in this cut up clip than they do in a live game

oh .. and Dobbs is good

Say what you will, but when a former pro qb says wow at the release and long ball thrown by Dobbs with little effort, he saw something as well. Lets just not expect too much. We are still early and won't peak for 2 years.

I'm excited about Dobbs and Ferguson in the future. I don't want to get too unrealistic about Dobbs as a true freshman but he looked pretty darn good against the #1 team. He does need to get down quicker when he runs...he's not gonna run anybody over. Hope he has a great week of practice and lights up Mizzou!

Oh, and thanks Freak for putting that together!

Not being a hater, seriously... Just to give extra atta-boy to Dobbs, while not taking anything from Worley... Should we do a cut-up of Worley's first freshman snaps and compare? I think this would calm some of the questions many may have about how effective Dobbs was in his first freshman appearance, against Bama.

Again, nothing against Worley, but what Dobbs did for a half, as a freshman, against Bama, was very impressive!

that endzone potential TD pass to North was a beauty. North ran a sloppy route that allowed the DB to break on the ball. Should have been a TD.

After watching this, I feel about the same as I did during the game about his throwing: It's pretty good. Yeah, there were a couple of throws that were a little misplaced, but besides the tips, they were all catchable, and most importantly, he made it basically impossible to get an interception on the balls he threw into tight coverage. Normally, some of those throws would be a little iffy, but the coverage was tight all night and he had to try to make something happen.

I'm actually more concerned about his running. Having a mobile quarterback opens up a lot more, and that's great. However, while I was watching the game, I was really impressed with his options. Looking back, I was only probably really impressed because he actually kept some and I'm not used to that out of our quarterbacks. I didn't count, but it seems that about half the time, I would say he read the defense wrong. To be fair, though, it was his first game, Alabama has a great defense, and a couple of the bad reads were on his first drive in the game.

I'm not impressed with Josh Smith thus far.

@ 5:10 Smith has his defender beat 2 yards and has to come back, the ball is underthrown and he smacks into the defender.

@ 5:36 The ball could have had more zip, sorta a wobbler, and Smith's defender had his arm between Smith's to knock the ball out.

I'm not defending or not defending Smith. But the dude set national receiving records, so I doubt he's got "bricks" for hands. I think it's more at the freshmen getting used to each others route timing at game speed and they were playing the fricking best defense in the nation.

I'm not totally sold on Dobbs yet. Worley, warts and all, led us to a W over a better team. Maybe Dobbs is the man, maybe not. We'll see.

Do not know how much accuracy there is in the bolded anaylsis. Smith had the CB beat by 2 yards and the throw was pretty badly underthrown. Smith came back to the ball and it ended up hitting him in the hands, so he should have caught it. But not because the throw was good. If the ball had more on it and was thrown where it was suppose to be thrown, it would have been a touchdown.

The ball traveled 50 yards in the air, I think what you mean is "if he had thrown it a little earlier".
