Josh Heupel emerges (old thread)

first page was hilarious to read.

That avatar is awesome! I had a schedule poster in my bedroom with that photo on it. The photo (TD Woods) was from 1988 Tennessee-Bama and the schedule poster was for the 1989 season. Took me back.

I'm surprised by this thread based on the established history of Vol fans immediately getting on board and supporting football coaching hires.

It's equally awesome to see all the hindsight soothsayers come in to bash the people that were skeptical of this hire after the fact . Like anyone knew HH was going to come in here and play like Joe Burrow Light .

I see people wanna go through old posts. I was not happy with the idea of hiring a coach with a regressing record. I was wrong. It is what it is. Wish I had the gift of hindsight.

Glad you can admit it. And yes, the regressing record was a concern. The one caveat at the time was that the 6-4 record came during the Covid year with a lot of opt outs and injuries (I think his top 2 QBs were injured that year, among numerous other losses). That could've been viewed as an excuse at the time. In hindsight, maybe it was a legitimate reason.

This is why ADs are paid to look deeper than a resume to make the right hire...and why White is good at his job. Remember, he hired Lance Leipold at Buffalo too. Heupel and Leipold might be the two leaders for National COY right now. White had worked with Heupel for 3 years and hired him at UCF. He was familiar with him. He would have known more than anyone what Heupel was capable of and why his record went to 6-4 his final year. Glad we got the right man in both spots. But I totally get the concern at the time.

Yep, there was no history of outstanding QB play under Heupel. None at all.

I tried to explain the reasoning for the record then but was told I was just excuse making for a failing coach. He had 10 opt outs just before the season started then 3 more in the season. I believe their best DL opted out. Each year he was at UCF he had to overcome QB hurdles and the offense was still great regardless.

Next time White has to make a coaching hire, I hope folks will give him the benefit of the doubt and reserve judgment.

Who am I kidding? We're talking about Vol fans here. ;)

“The ink is not on the contract, but Josh Heupel is emerging as the guy with the best shot at this job.” — Austin Price

My first reaction is that Heupel already has another job offer right after signing his recent (I think?) extension.

Man am I glad that was wrong, lol.

So my take on Heupel was a shrug. I was on record as saying Pruitt would be an improvement over Jones and at least get us to 10 wins, and man was I wrong about that. Then there was the whole likely probation + transfer portal exodus. After that I gave up on prognosticating and just decided to wait and see what would happen with zero expectations. That worked out pretty well actually. :D

My main issue wasn't with Heupel. I was concerned with the character of an AD that would snatch the HC of a school he just left. Obviously it worked for us and in hindsight , it wasn't a big deal . It just felt low class at the time , but it's not like dignity really matters anymore . They get paid to perform, not win over the righteous crowd. We're in good shape. We're winning , White has hit every note perfectly , and CJH has done an amazing job rebuilding that disaster. All's good.

Jeremy Pruitt had outstanding defense play under him , there's also that...

Pruitt never coached anywhere without an overwhelming talent advantage as a defensive coach. Heupel did. QB development is also a much more prized and difficult skill than being a defensive coach.

Plus, it's extremely difficult to not have a regressing record when you're coming in on the heels of an undefeated season. . .
