Which is why they were dismissed. They were part of Pearl's first full recruiting class and I'm sure he didn't have the benefit of recruiting these kids for 3 years like most coaches can. He didn't have the time to be around the kids enough to know what type of character they had. Thus, he took a chance on highly rated players because it gave us the best chance to win quickly. Once he saw they had character issues, he got rid of them. You can't ask for anything more than that.

I don't mean to pile on, but this is terribly naive.

If the fact Jim Calhoun dropped Ramar and Kelvin Sampson refused to recruit him didn't clue Pearl into Smith's character, he's even dumber than I thought.

When Pearl's gone, I'll worry about whether or not I want to associate with the head basketball coach. Until then, I'll treat Tanning Bed with the same respect I gave Jerry Green.

Pearl is going to be heartbroken.

I would think he couldn't care less. However, his towelboy Griff is always writing how butt hurt Pearl gets when anyone dares question his genius. I guess he thinks there'd be no pressure in places like Bloomington or Tucson.

Not really. It's really not that far off from what Kiffin did with Bryce Brown. Here's a guy that everyone thought had a "handler" in Brian Butler and would miss games, but Kiffin took a chance and obviously it worked out well. Wish Ramar and Duke had work out because they were good players, but it didn't.

Funny how it worked out for awhile, until we got into scholarship number issues.

I agree with you Hat as far as the recruiting of thugs goes. A family friend plays for the Nashville Celtics and said that Pearl told Casey Prather that he was the best player in the state, yet he refused to recruit him because my friend said that Pearl only recruits thugs... And looking at most of the kids that he has recruited I have to agree. I would rather have Prather than Crawford anyday!

That's the fact you dim bulbs don't get. I don't have any inclination to be a "UT insider" as long as the current slime inhabits the basketball offices. I'll take the folks I've known in the UT adminsitration for years and the coaches around the country I speak to on a nearly daily basis. I like them. When Pearl's gone, I'll worry about whether or not I want to associate with the head basketball coach. Until then, I'll treat Tanning Bed with the same respect I gave Jerry Green.

Nobody cares about the other coaches you talk to. It's a TENN board so if you want to rub one off about the other coaches you talk to, do it on their schools board.

Welcome to the board man, but this might be one of the most rediculous posts ever. You are trying to tell me that Pearl told Prather he was the best in state, but didn't want him because he wasn't thug enough? WOW, please, get better friends

With the exception of that kid from East Ridge, all Pearl does is give sholarships out to black kids... not necessarily thugs.

I'm offended by you confusing "thugs" with "blacks".

Appologize... I'll be waiting.

I don't understand Pearl's philosophy. There is good talent in the state but he never recruits any of them. John Jenkins, or whatever his name is that committed to vandy last year, was a stud. joe jackson, casey prather, and michael bradley(who is from chattanooga and just committed to UCON) are all good players and should be at TN!!!!

I must have missed something....
I don't see anywhere that he said anything that resembled saying that blacks were thugs or thugs were black.
I don't agree with what he said (Scotty as an example),
but please don't put words into someone's post.

maybe you should appologize too

Wow, this thread went south fast. It'll be interesting to see what happens w/ Selby. I think we need him too much to play hollier than thou w/ his previous de-commitment. We need a big recruiting class this season. Selby and Harris would go a long ways towards helping us get over losing 4 seniors and the Diaper Dandy dud who'll probably leave after next season.

In Pearl's defense, they did all they could in the recruitment of Joe Jackson.

There is zero chance Selby comes to Tennessee.
