Josiah-Jordan James returning to Tennessee

Basilio has some occasional information, I’ll admit it. But this one is hard for me to believe. CRB and JJJ are about as close as any player CRB has ever coached. I just can’t buy the idea that CRB was “shocked” that JJJ announced his return without it being approved first.
Yeah....their relationship is far beyond what we usually see. They have a deep respect for each other, and Rick is THRILLED to have JJJ back regardless of walk-on etc. status. ANY clear-thinking fan should realize depth of understanding by JJJ with team philosophy, strategy, defensive spacing and assignments etc. takes years to learn. He will CLEARLY be a coach on and off the floor. This development is all upside...and nothing negative at all.

Pardon me if i am not excited. Great guy but completely disappears in March. Stats from our last 3 NCAA losses:

OSU- 2-10 0-5
Michigan 5-13 0-6
Florida Atlantic 3-11 2-6

Total in the 3 losses - 10-34 and 2-17

Certainly he is not the only one to blame but 5 stars are supposed to step up in March, not disappear.
Never been a fan of his game either. Absolutely refuses to drive to the basket. Good defender and actually had a rare good offensive run during his Junior year. Maybe he finds some of that Junior year magic.

I like his game and he really produces when he is not injured. His experience is invaluable and , as mentioned before, is a coach on the floor. I think his coming back is a huge for the team.

I don’t remember a lot of players that have been able to drive through defenses AND take the ball to the basket. Johnson, Springer, and Chandler might be it. Turner, ZZ, and SV could get to the rim but weren’t great at finishing. Bone and Admiral might have been capable at times. Bone got most of his easy scores at the rim by sprinting past defenses.

JJJ, Phillips, Bowden, and Yves were good at getting behind defenses along the baseline for back door dunks if there was an accurate passer on the floor to feed them.

These aren’t NBA players. Almost every NCAA player will have some deficiencies to work on. I’m glad that JJJ is back. He brings a lot.

I wasn't really enthused with any of the seniors outside of SV returning, but now that JJJ is back, I can see a role for him. Given his injuries, it's great that he's not a piece we will have to rely on, but his minutes can be limited and production is more icing on the cake instead of something we need in order to succeed. As a walk-on he's kinda like house money for the team.

Yes. We’re in the unfortunate position of having a 6 6” walk-on with five years of experience, an NBA body, who also plays three positions, averages ten points a game, five rebounds and two assists— while guarding 1-4, making no mistakes and leading the press break. I hope we can find some way he can help.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing. I think his physical problems make him suspect as a starter. Not sure his body can handle a full season in the SEC wars. Now we don't have to rely on him. He can play when his body allows and the team is deep enough that it can continue on without a major drop off when he can't go. Best of all, it costs us nothing as you pointed out. A walk-on like JJJ is, for lack of better term, a luxury other teams would kill to have. There's absolutely no downside to him returning under these circumstances.

The medical feedback he received over last year’s Winter Break was that he had a high chance of full recovery from the knee, but would need 6-8 weeks of rehab without practicing. I think this scenario allows him to do that. I’d look for him to be a light participant In conditioning and practice in hopes that they can stop the swelling cycle. Sadly he’s only had about twelve healthy games (end of season 22) since the initial injury. Those games were impressive. I hope he has the chance to be that player again. If not, he’s still 10/5/2 with great D and very few mistakes.

Considering he’s walking on there’s no risk and a super high reward, anyone trying to negative spin this at all needs to have their head examined.

It is amazing to me how many posters on this board disregard JJJ's injuries and how it affected his play on the court for much of his career

Pfft. Sunshine pumper.

(Did I do it right?)

It's as good as it gets having a guy like JJJ coming back for an unexpected 5th year. Barnes will platoon him, if you will, at various positions. He won't be counted on to contribute lots of points. He will be great defensively, and provide efficiency to the offense. He rebounds well too. How in the world is this not a good thing?????

There's always the chance he might be healthy and driven. Then he will be a major force

Could be. A lot depends on injury status and where his head is. Did not appear heavily engaged last year but that could be from the knee soreness.

He often passes up clear lanes to the basket. It's more of a mental deficiency than a physical inability.
