'22 JUCO DB Desmond Williams (Tennessee signee)

Dude's highlight tape is phenomenal, so this isn't surprising.

But, this is finally a good pickup that we know he's rated as the #1 JUCO CB in the country.
his tape looks better than the other JUCO DBs we are on. Also that’s no knock on them but this dude looks crazy athletic. Ball skills jump off the screen.

Swain made a few good points about the ratings yesterday on his show.

1. What you said, people excited after the bump like he wasn’t good before

2. And this surprised me, recruiting offices from schools influence ratings. The sites ask them for input on their lists

3. The sites cater to their subscribers. For ex, we have a lot so he said they’ll make sure we’re in the teens

Oh for sure. Sometimes I'll watch a recruits highlight tape and get through a minute or two and be like, well he's all right. However, I watched Williams' tape a solid 3 times in a row lol. I think we got a steal with this one.

Recruit ratings are like fantasy football rankings. For the most part, pretty good overall for a general expected range of expected performance. However, you always trust your opinion, or in this case the coach's opinion (if he knows what he is doing), over the rankings. Can find a lot sleepers late in the rankings because of the biases the media has towards big market teams, splashy players, etc

Does anyone know how CC football in Mississippi works. I don't think we need to question his level of competition if we don't question other Missippi JUCO kids level of competition. I would imagine there are only so many JUCO teams there and they all play each other.

Mississippi probably has the best Juco system of any state in the country...at least in sports. Kansas also has good ones, but I believe this is a reason why Dan Mullen had a good ride at MSU. He took advantage of in-state Juco talent.

I think too many people don't understand things like this. The recruiting sites don't have the time or resources to do the kinds of evaluations programs do. Most if not all P-5 programs use recruiting consultants who do in depth research on potential recruits that they identify and any brought to them by the staff. Saban and those contributing to his recruiting effort are very good... so the recruiting sites favor recruits that he places high emphasis on.

It allows them to sell a product... but these guys who think they somehow evaluate every player and accurately rank each one... are way, way off.

Emcc is right down the road from Starkville. They have big time players that are going to get pulled away but I don't think MSU spends enough time there

Interesting info. Thanks.
Mississippi really has it going for them with Jucos. I think Kansas/Missouri did it for the same reasons. Basically, high school education and coaching is so poor in the state the kids are not academically or always athletically prepared for college. Getting them to Juco gets their grades in order and gets them 1-2 years of higher quality coaching.

Mississippi high school football is absolutely stacked too. It may not have the allure of Texas or Georgia, but they're pumping out D1/P5 talent like nobody's business, and those kids seem to work harder and make it to the league consistently.

EMCC is kinda between Tuscaloosa and Starkville. Plus, Bama, Ole Miss, LSU... just about everyone is banging down their door for the top athletes. If MSU put a lockdown on them in recruiting they could rise quickly.
