Julian Phillips in the transfer portal

Everybody wants to act like guys are bums for leaving UT, but these are talented basketball players. UT basketball is not infallible. Barnes isn't perfect when it comes to evaluation and development. Things don't always work out, and it isn't always because guys just suck at basketball. Just because a guy can't blossom in this system doesn't mean he isn't going to be a really good player.

All these keyboard warriors on here acting like they know more about basketball than the guy leaving the program need to take a Cheetos break.
How is that any different than the keyboard warriors who think they know more than the head coach with 779 career wins?

This you?
He wasn't going to reach it here. Barnes didn't know how to use him.

People acting like players not living up to the hype is something new. It’s always been happening. Difference is now all of the stupid star rankings create higher expectations. People putting too much emphasis on what guesses the recruiting publications print. High level in high school doesn’t automatically translate to immediate high production at the next level.

Come on man there are so many reasons players come to Tennessee and play for Rick Barnes. Freddie Dillione was a borderline 5 star player and he may in fact be better then Phillips..

Irony at its finest.

Did Barnes utilize the things he was good at? What so you think? Did Phillips look comfortable in this offense? Of course not, and it isnt because he suddenly couldn't play offense. Anyone that knows Barnes knows that Phillips was never going to be a good fit for this system. And this isn't the first time a post or wing hasn't worked out here because they dont want to play the style of basketball Barnes makes them play.

Because I don't think Phillips is a bad basketball player? Because I think he is leaving because he knows he won't flourish in this system? I have news for you: Barnes doesn't think he is a bad player either and probably also knows that it was going to take a lot of work to be good in this system offensively. I doubt he wanted Phillips to go, but dude wants to be in the NBA sooner rather than later. Thats not happening here.

And I don't think i know more than Barnes. I just recognize what Barnes is doing. He knows what he wants to run, and he wants guys to learn his system. That doesn't always work out. Especially with his offense. Barnes knows that just as well as anyone.

Barnes has put 30 guys into the NBA. At least half of them have been F/C. I think Barnes knows how to coach the position. Kevin Durant agrees.

Players need to be just as willing to adjust to a system as a coach is to adjusting to a player. And Barnes has made it work with many types of players.

If you think Phillips should have done a bunch of ISO, ISO is really inefficient in college. I think Barnes highlighted his defense well. It’s hard to thrive offensively in most systems without a jumpshot unless you’re a great driver or you’re a post

We did run plenty of iso, it doesn't work so well when you're not hitting jumpers and none of the defenders chase you out of the paint.

When Phillips did play iso, he either got knocked off his dribble or turned the ball over.

Not exactly sure what Barnes is supposed to do in that scenario. Changing systems isn’t going to make him stronger nor improve his shooting.

Phillips's limitations in this offense were entirely physical. Did you even watch him play? The paint might as well have been guarded by steel bars when he tried to enter off the dribble. How is his lack of physicality Barnes's fault? How can Barnes utilize the things he's good at it when Phillips is allergic to any level of physical contact?

I’m convinced you didn’t watch many games this season. If you had, you would be fully aware that they tried to isolate Phillips on numerous occasions and he consistently lost the ball couldn’t handle any contact. He also had a mediocre outside shot. There is not a lot scheme wise that a coach can do with a player like that. It’s on Phillips to get stronger and develop his jump shot. If he fails to do those two things, no offensive system is going to make him a good scorer.

You can get away with being more athletic than everybody else in high school but once you hit college, kids are a lot stronger.

When you’re not a threat to shoot the ball, the defense 99% of the time is going to force you to drive to the paint which is something Phillips couldn’t do.

Blaming Barnes for Phillip’s struggles is downright silly.

His strength and ball handling held him back. I think the non- dunk at Vandy killed his confidence. It seemed to me after that he started thinking to much instead of reacting. I truly hate that he's not coming back to UT to prove himself. He has a chance to be very good. Going to Auburn IMO will hurt his development. Who has CBP ever truly developed?

Did I miss the announcement of JP committing to Auburn or is this just internet speculation?

Until Phillips get strong with the ball, he will struggle offensively. He needs a tight handle

He entered the portal as a fall back and maybe a bit of negotiating leverage when it's time for contract talk....assuming it gets to that point. IMO, I think he'll stay in the draft if he gets a grade no worse than the top half of the second round. Ain't gonna be in orange next year so good luck to the kid.
