Julian Phillips in the transfer portal

Auburn fans are desperate for him to come there on social media yet not a single one of them realizes we would have to approve an inter-conference transfer since Phillips missed the May 1 deadline. Oh, man, how awesome it’s going to be when they get their spirits broken yet again. Phillips will never play for Auburn.
Is that deadline for BOTH football and basketball? Makes sense for football…their professional draft just concluded. Basketball has a 2-3 month separation.

Are you trying to prove my point? Kennedy was exactly the type of point guard this offense needs. Springer and Johnson both were inconsistent, but their strengths aligned with what Barnes wanted better than Phillips.. Barnes needs to stop targeting super athletic wings who want to face up and iso. He keeps recruiting them and they never pan out because thats not what he wants at that position.
How many of these “super athletic wings” have we gotten? I’m pretty sure Keon set some NBA combine records with his athleticism and Kennedy was ultra athletic too and both have very successful freshman season. Who else?

3 different types of 5 stars: You have your rare ones like Anthony Davis

You have your JJJ types. Good when healthy, but played in a so-so division in high-school. Over ranked. Decent 4 year player. Will do more good than bad for your program

You have your Scotty Hopson types. Completely hyped up as the next coming of LeBron James, but just Complete busts.
Hopson was frustrating but far from a complete bust. He was fantastic his last year (junior year). Carried us through a good portion of the SEC schedule. And that was on a team that was in completely disarray as Pearls time was coming to a close

It's the BS five-star mentality--and probably has more to do with the families who have dreams of new houses and cars when
Junior gets his first-round NBA contract after a one-and-done college season. When that doesn't happen, and there will be a delay
in the receipt of new houses, cars and bling, they look for a scapegoat--which of course is the coach and the team that "didn't use him right."
Yea, yea, yea: Everyone at every school has heard it. Huntley-Hatfield is still in college--not headed to the NBA.

I don't even want Phillips. I want Tyrin Lawrence

It's this going to hurt Barnes and recruiting in the long run? Seems like we've had a run of higher ranked prospects not working out or developing here.

As in? He made Robert Hubbs a better player (until he hurt his knee in his Sr year).....Keon Johnson, Springer and Kennedy Chandler all showed enough as Fr to get drafted....

A run of 2 if JP doesn’t get drafted?

Yohan Traore was similarly ranked to JP in last year’s class and he just portaled out of Auburn after doing next to nothing last year so why would JP be interested in Auburn anyway?

This class they just signed is what they should do every year 4 stars and 3 stars. Barnes best team how many 5 stars was on it here at Tennessee.Dont understand why people go crazy over 5 stars anyway, look at Kentucky usually loaded with 5 stars and Calipari is on hot seat every year for the teams performance.Rather have a team of players with chips on their shoulders instead of a team of egomaniacs

Traore was more expected imo. He just started playing ball and is just a raw athlete. It will definitely be used against Barnes on the recruiting trail if he doesn’t stay in the draft imo. Whether that’s effective or not, who knows, probably not.

He has some talent, but his handles were really bad. If he goes to Auburn, I bet there was some tampering going on!
I honestly feel no ill will towards JP but i agree. Until he learns how to handle the ball and develop strong hands (much much stronger hands than he has now) he's going to struggle going to the basket at any level. Makes you wonder how evaluators didn't factor that in before his college career. Too me...its that much of a problem for him.... And i think its obvious about the Auburn tampering issue...simply not sure how one could reach a decision to go to Auburn WITHOUT prior contact. Just connect the dots. Wish him well.

Of course you say that. Traore was a 5 star, top 25 player, exactly 5 spots below Phillips on 247. Some of our fans would be roasting Barnes if Traore had a season like he did at Auburn and then transferred.

Scotty Hopson knew how to dribble.
YES! Not sure why we rarely discuss this about JP. CLEARLY ....his major issue is lack of control/strength with the ball in his hands. May have the weakest hands of any 6'9" player we've had in years. Now of course IF he was a knock down 3 shooter its not as big an issue. But he lost the handle more times than not driving to the basket. Earlier in the season he was drawing fouls but that seemed to dissipate as the injuries etc piled up. I definitely hope the kid is successful. Seemed like a good moral kid. Just has trouble with the ball in his hands and doing something STRONG with it. JMO.
