Just got my Bill Maher tickets

My problem is attempting to get your goat because I love how you respond to queries......

:)

Speaking of which, when do I need to sport the Obama avatar and signature?

My goat might be entertaining but it tastes bad.

Let's hold off on the avatar and sig until after next Tuesday. Might not need it. (fingers crossed).

Or India, maybe? But I agree - there's no doubt that humans will do whatever they need to do to have enough resources (food) to stay alive.

Okay. I'm obviously not fluent in post comprehension and appreciate the kind remarks.

I wouldn't dwell on it too much, people don't know how to take me in real life.

:)

It is a gift from God!

:eek:k:

If you say so......

Yea...being a researcher means you are immune to family members dying of terrible diseases. I am sure there is not a single researcher alive that chose his field based soley on that fact that a close family member died from the disease he is trying to cure.

Who said that?

You sure about that? I would imagine there are countless researchers at these companies and funded by these companies that would dispute your claim.

I believe that this statement is certainly true. However, where will the company allow one to focus his/her efforts? Umm...I don't know..it could come into play here. I think that if a company saw the cure right there, there is no way that they would ignore it. However, I don't know how much money a company would invest to find something that would put them out of business in that market for the most part...

But wouldn't finding a cure literally put every competitor out of business (at least in that market) as well as having every single person on the planet with X condition coming to you? I mean, it's hard for me to see how being the holder of a cure financially screws you.

You would not be the sole holder of the cure after a few years...everyone else would have it as well. So, the entire industry would lose out on this market...and a one-time cure doesn't make you that much money. It really just depresses that whole sector...not just your company. If the cure consisted of a series of shots or something that you had to take your whole life and the gov't would allow them to charge a lot of money for...then it would not be as hard of a hit...

I understand patents expire. But why would others want to get in on it if there is no profit to be made?

So that your competitor can't charge whatever they want, allowing their profits to surge while you lose out on the market altogether. In a fair market, I don't see how the profits could be near as much for a cure as compared to a treatment; however, one company could make a killing (ha ha) if no one else was in the market.

OK...but the first point is that it was a dead end market. If that is true...you'll not have to worry about competitors jumping in 7 years after you have already staked your claim to this dead end market. If it is not a dead end market...then there is profit to be made and thus reason for the companies to pursue the cures. I have no doubt that a company would make money on cures over the long haul. If you have to take a shot to prevent Parkinson's...everyone from here until eternity will request the shot. If they don't create a preventive solution..instead they cure you after you contract it...people will still continue contracting it and the cure will continuously be purchased.

I see what you mean, but wouldn't a few years be plenty to make a fortune? Especially if you are curing something big?

Right...it is obviously not a dead-end market...as long as new individuals are born and we are talking about a non-infectious disease. I suppose the whole argument changes for infectious diseases...

I think this discussion of a "cure" is a bit polly-annish.

Most cures are not a magic pill and "poof" you cancer is gone. It would more likely be treatment that would constitute a revenue stream.

Additionally, there are some many forms of cancer and outcomes of cancer that to speak of a cure as an endgame is unrealistic.

There are enough diseases out there that Big Pharma can cure away and still make money.
