Just trying to understand the "we can't fire Zo if we make tourney in any capacity"

If you fire Martin after making the NCAAT then you better have Pearl in the bag.

I don't say that because I think Pearl is the only good coach we can get, I say that because at that point he'd be the only good coach who would even entertain coming here.

I honestly can't understand how fans can set an expectation in their head for how the season should play out and then get this "no excuses" mentality. I thought we should be good before the season began and that we should make the NCAAT field this year. Our talent warrants that IMO but anything else past that would just be more icing on the cake. How can anyone decide that we should go from not in the tournament to a high seed and if we don't we have failed and should cut-bait and fish for a new coach? That does not take into account what anyone else does. Shouldn't we at least let each season play out before deciding to fire the coach immediately (mid-season) because the team didn't live up to some pie-in-the-sky expectation. CCM may turn out not to be the answer for Tennessee or he may. Who knows? All I know is that some of you out there (and you know who you are) have had it in for him almost from day 1. I am just glad that the AD doesn't hire and fire based on the same knee-jerk reactions that a lot of our fans have. Fans around here change every time the wind blows a different direction. Win a couple of games and everything quiets down... lose one and the firing wolves pounce again. Although nobody on VN seems to notice, we are in much better shape than we were in either of the first two seasons under CCM but because some set their expectations so high pre-season it almost doesn't seem so. I want us to be up near the top again as much as anyone, but historically we have not been in basketball so why should we now think we can get there by showing no patience.

Oh, and the few of you that have said you would take another Jerry Green please go find another sport to follow. You obviously know nothing about basketball.

At this point some people are just set in their ways. We could beat Florida by 30 and some people would complain.

I do believe a Florida or Mizz win could solidify us as a 4th selection from the SEC to the dance, of course we need to take care of home and get on a win streak.

Pay $3-4 mil, and watch them line up for an interview. If they can CCM and only offer his current pay all the mid major and under coaches will still line up. You might think CCM got a tough deal but $2mil+ a year will get a lot of hats thrown into the ring

TN should easily be a top 25 team with the talent it has. This season has been a drastic failure by Martin. He has proven for 3 years he is not the man to take TN where it should be. I say good riddance.

But who knew that Maymon would start so slow and just now get to around 90% of what he was? And, who knew that Hubbs would nurse and eventually go down with a shoulder injury? Those were two key pieces for those preseason expectations. Oh, but I forgot... no excuses.

Not ones that great; they'll be going other places for more pay if you only offer what Martin is making.

If you really think Maymon and Hubbs are the reason we're losing to teams like Vandy, you may need a strong dose of your own advice.

I've actually said the best case scenario is for Martin to make the dance and move on after the season, so I don't guess I'm in the group you're calling.

I will say this however, in the coaching fraternity CCM is thought of pretty highly. His peers think he's a great guy, and a solid coach, and that he's doing a decent job given the hand he was dealt. So I think if you fire the guy after making the dance, you're sending off a message to other candidates that just making the dance isn't enough, you've gotta advance consistently.

Now there's nothing wrong with that mindset or requirement, by when you're gonna go bargain shopping for coaches you're likely not gonna find someone in our price range that thinks those requirements are fair.

Jmo

Hand he was dealt? He's done nothing in 3 years. And this current team is the best he will field.

There is not a semblance of this team being coached. None. Anywhere. Period.

He inherited nothing really. When Pearl had similar talent levels he had similar results. Won 19-22 games and lost first or second game. He did that half his years here.

Truth is we are on pace still for the NCAA. That was all we were expected to do this year. If we make it we had an ok year. Not the greatest ever, but ok. Martin finished above projections the first two years.

Any season that doesn't end with a tourney bid is a failed season. 20 wins doesn't mean shat if you're playing in the NIT.

Love these, they typical...when we beat good teams by 30 it's all the players. When we lose to bad team, it's all coach Martin.

Can't have it both ways slick.
