Just trying to understand the "we can't fire Zo if we make tourney in any capacity"

His best coached game in his 3 years here. If he can continue to improve his coaching maybe he will grow into the position? He gives us hope then destroys it with a game like Vandy? I sure wish he would hire a top x and o assistant if he's back next season.

That's what I'm taking about! GBO!

I agree. If he hires a good x & o guy, as well as someone to work the refs, & someone else to motivate the team...I think we'll be in better shape!

How would you motivate Maymon, McRae, and Stokes, just curious?

Motivation is not the problem. Love how people just throw in the kitchen sink when they don't like something.

And I love it when people who don't have a clue whether motivation is a problem make blanket statements like 'Motivation is not the problem.'

My statements based on games I've seen them sleep walk thru and the seeming lack of passion from our bench during most games.

Yea, it's the easiest cop out argument when your team loses. This team has shown the last two years that they will play hard for him. They would have folded otherwise. The problems are more scheme and strategy. Maybe you can point to a game here or there, but you can do that with every team during the season. Xavier, UTEP, WSU, UK, UF, and A&M (14 point halftime lead) were not because of a lack of motivation. But carry on.

I'm not trying to be a d-bag. Look, when you have upper classmen like we have, and it's getting down to crunch time, what card does the coach have to play?

A coach can't will them to do it, they have to actually do it themselves. You can tell them one thousand times that if the shots don't fall, you have to be tougher on the other side of the court.

It's rare that I say something negative about the players, but when things aren't going their way they pout. That's not on Martin, not at this stage, it's on them.

You can't just want to win, there's another team on the court, you have to take it, you have to want it more.

Hopson, Goins, Williams, Tobias Harris, and Tatum went 19-15.

IIRC we also had the 1st or 2nd most difficult schedule that year. A year in which Pearl served a multigame suspension and coached as a lame duck with a plethora of distractions. We were a 9 seed.

It's funny how pearls final year excuses are fine, but posters are quick to say no excuses whatsoever for Zo lol.

The coaches job is to coach and hide distractions and not let it effect his team. That team went 19-15, and got in as a 9 seed iirc, with a more talented roster.

And McRae is better than Hopson, Stokes is worlds better than Williams and Josh is a much better player overall than Cam was his senior year. Cam was just terrible for most of his senior year, it was so strange.

Goins and Harris are legitimate upgrades however, but I still don't know if it balances out.

If you really think Maymon and Hubbs are the reason we're losing to teams like Vandy, you may need a strong dose of your own advice.

Never said that, but could've contributed to games like Wichita State or NC State. Almost every team has a flat game now and then, doesn't excuse the Vandy loss or the TA&M debacle, but in those earlier games it could have played a part.

I am not defending CCM, i just feel that a lot of people are too quick to try and pull the trigger on coaches when things don't immediately fall into place. If we don't make the tourney this year, then this discussion would be more relevent. Right now we should be more worried about winning games than coaching searches.

I've actually said the best case scenario is for Martin to make the dance and move on after the season, so I don't guess I'm in the group you're calling.

I will say this however, in the coaching fraternity CCM is thought of pretty highly. His peers think he's a great guy, and a solid coach, and that he's doing a decent job given the hand he was dealt. So I think if you fire the guy after making the dance, you're sending off a message to other candidates that just making the dance isn't enough, you've gotta advance consistently.

Now there's nothing wrong with that mindset or requirement, by when you're gonna go bargain shopping for coaches you're likely not gonna find someone in our price range that thinks those requirements are fair.

Jmo

What hand was he dealt? This isn't the dumpster fire that Dooley or Butch inherited. He walked into plenty of talent in a soaring program with a thriving fan base. If he was a good coach, this wouldn't be a bubble team at best, it would be a dangerous 4 or 5 seed. His teams have done nothing but underachieve in a weak SEC conference all 3 of his seasons.

I'm not saying those excuses are fine, I am just clarifying what happened.

Comparing the teams and the outcomes is a highly objective matter, but if I were to do it with my own opinions, then I would say the talent levels of those teams are very similar.

I would agree with similar, but also not pearls most talented team either. All I was saying is that I don't think this is even close to the most talented team in Tennessee history like some are saying.

I don't think that was Pearl's most talented team. I believe the team that got us to #1 was. Tyler Smith, Lofton, Jujuan Smith, Chism, Prince, Ramar Smith, Crews. Talent at every position.
