I would have to say Cobb. Boyd may have been the bigger player to go somewhere else, but if my memory is correct he was still committed to UT after Fulmer's firing. I thought Kiffin told him to look someplace else. That would hardly qualify as a miss. There are probably bigger words to use but not to print. Cobb was a flat out miss or whiff in recruiting.

Another miss was Larry Carter of Englewood and McMinn Central. He was overlooked probably because of a teammate. Went to UK: Started as a freshman as DB; returned punts and maybe kickoffs; backup QB. Started 4 years and drafted by Bronco's with a high draft pick. Fastest player on the Bronco's roster as a rookie. Injured in rookie preseason game tackling Earl Campbell and retired.

And yes I know he played just a little before my time, that is why I started this thread. Like I said there is better players then Cobb, just he would have been so important at that time due to how awful are punt return was. And for those that do not understand field position go back and look at the Ga. punt. Palardy,s final punt almost won us a game. Hats off to that young man this year.

Smyrna was Willis a miss or did he choose OleMiss, I thought he was kinda influenced by his ole miss adopted family like Michael was????

He was a BIG miss. Fulmer, like some here, got dazzled by the "Stars" listed behind Daniel Brooks' name(5*) and recruited him instead of Willis(2*). Patrick has said in interviews that he would have come here had he been recruited. Patrick was mainly rated a 2* because nobody had heard of him due to where he was from and who he played against. If he had played at a bigger school against different comp, he would have easily been a 4*.

This is one thing I like about CBJ and his staff. They do their own evaluations on players and are not influenced by "star" ratings. I think that was one of Fulmers biggest downfalls. He just wanted highly ranked guys and didn't do his homework and evaluate the guys thoroughly enough.

Back a few years ago, WS missed on a kid from Virginia made Terry Kirby. He was a good back @ Va. But would have been he is man worthy behind our OL in those days. Second would have to been the Thompson kid from Knoxville who went to Penn St.When you have a # 1 recruit in the country in your hometown and miss that sucks.

I'm still pissed that we couldn't get C.J. Boleman. For being so close, to lose out on a starting kicker in the NFL? That really hurts.

He wasn't so much a miss as it was a case of our still running the single-wing during his senior season in high school. That fact cost us access to both Spurrier and Steve Sloan, who were both Tennessee boys but could see no place for themselves as quarterbacks in our then antiquated offense. Spurrier later said that, if Dickey had been hired one year earlier (i.e. 1963), he probably would have come to Tennessee.

IMO a miss is someone you actually could have gotten so I'll go with Chad Pennington or Patrick Willis.

Cobb and Willis were two pretty big misses. It always sucks watching players from TN go off and become stars at other SEC programs.
