Kenneth Roberts (Northwest Passage - for you heathens and youngsters) wrote that the Revolution was the setup for the War Between the States. I was disappointed that he never fully explained his reasoning and precisely what were the differences he felt so critical; perhaps we are part of what's always been a divisive country bound to fail. However, I believe if we'd retained our original purpose, work ethic, and if some of us weren't sold on false prophets like Marx and whatever fashionable thought prances along that we'd have a country that might endure. Difference is good and it can shape something better, but when difference goes beyond reason, civility, and compromise, it's not possible - the physical term is exceeding the limits of elasticity and yield strength. It's hard to believe that people who've grown up in this country would even tolerate the thought of fundamental change or the thought that rather than making their own way that the state should redistribute the what others earned. All the government needs do is provide a reasonable platform for people to work and prosper - at minimal cost and with minimal disruption and regulation.
