Dave Portnoy seems to believe that the Wisconsin coach instigated this and that Howard was assaulted.

Suspension? Yes, maybe even for the rest of the season. Fired? no.

Wisconsin coach isn't completely innocent here..

He's an idiot. Maybe the WI guy instigated but that's only assault if you're a complete pussy. It doesn't excuse or even begin to explain throwing hands.

He's being hyperbolic for comedic purposes.

However, he is not wrong that Howard merely said "I'll remember that" while passing by and Gard is the one who physically stopped him. Obviously, that doesn't justify Howard's response.

I can't believe Michigan was pressing when down 15 with 15 seconds left. I can't believe Wisconsin thought the appropriate response was to call a timeout. Then, Howard is reluctant to shake hands and mouths off. Gard doesn't let the comment go and physically stops Howard. Howard then hits Gard's assistant. No class to be found anywhere on the court.

Is he just kidding? He's a Michigan guy so it doesn't come off that way.

If you watched Gard’s PC, he said he wanted to explain to Howard why he called the timeout. That’s why he stopped him. Howard didn’t care.

Howard’s comments made no sense. He was asked why he was pressing and said he wasn’t- just playing 5 on 5 man. Then he said he had to protect himself when the slap was well after he and Gard were separated.

I would hope so.

Ohio State fired Woody Hayes for punching a player.
One, I think they’re a difference in punching an opposing player compared to an opposing coach. Secondly, Hayes was 65, which in those days, was considered old for a football coach. The program had slipped and a lot of people at OSU probably saw it as a good opportunity to put him out to pasture.

I saw his post game explanation. Still not the right move.

As for stopping him, also not the right move. You can try to explain when Howard mouths off.. Howard is more than likely going to blow you off and walk right past you. You can say your piece afterwards at the press conference. No need to physically stop him.

I don’t necessarily agree with your second paragraph. Sometimes, there is a need to explain to the other party why something was done for both sides to hash out a misunderstanding. I think it’s human nature for most people to want to settle a controversy. I don’t see anything wrong with what Gard tried to do. A severe overreaction by Howard. If Howard doesn’t want to settle the controversy, then that’s on him, too and obviously someone who wants to create a problem.

Howard’s comments made absolutely no sense.

That's because there is no sensible defense. His only prayer would have been to say he was 100 percent in the wrong and has no excuse for his behavior and will accept whatever punishment comes his way as he completely deserves it.

Maybe then, MAYBE, you could justify a suspension for rest of season type punishment. But even then, I don't know.

A little research on Woody Hayes...quite the charmer.

After losses or ties, Hayes conducted locker room interviews while naked. A journalist from his tenure noted, "He was an ugly guy so it would clear the locker room out pretty fast."

Controversies[edit]
In 1959, following a 17−0 loss to USC, Hayes threw a punch at Los Angeles Examiner sportswriter Al Bine, but missed, and punched the brother of Pasadena Independent sports editor Bob Shafer in the back instead.[8] In a May 1965 meeting of Big Ten Conference athletic directors and coaches, Hayes nearly started a fight with Iowa's athletic director, Forest Evashevski, before being restrained.

Prior to the 1973 Rose Bowl, Hayes shoved a camera into the face of a news photographer. As a result, Hayes was suspended for three games, fined $2,000, and left California with a subpoena.

In 1977, a late fumble at Michigan caused him to charge at ABC cameraman Mike Freedman, who recorded his frustration; Hayes was ejected, put on probation by the Big Ten Conference, and fined $2,000.
