I don’t necessarily agree with your second paragraph. Sometimes, there is a need to explain to the other party why something was done for both sides to hash out a misunderstanding. I think it’s human nature for most people to want to settle a controversy. I don’t see anything wrong with what Gard tried to do. A severe overreaction by Howard. If Howard doesn’t want to settle the controversy, then that’s on him, too and obviously someone who wants to create a problem.
Howard’s comments made absolutely no sense.
It is never wise to confront a person who is obviously furious; whether it be a coach in a post-game lineup or your wife after something you did (or didn't do).
You can offer a verbal explanation in passing. If they choose to ignore your explanation, then so be it. What you don't do is force a physical confrontation with a furious person. Give them physical space and let them cool down. Howard would have received the same message via a postgame press conference better than being physically stopped in the moment when his blood was obviously boiling.
