Kara Lawson at the Lady Vol's Head Coach?

I think we all like Kara but we need a proven experienced coach with the right motivation, people skills, recruiting, and of course great coaching skills. Sadly, Holly is not it.:shakehead:

Like Pat was when she started as a head coach?

UConn Fan,

I agree with your posts. Pat Summit brought women's college basketball to the level it is today. She was a great motivator and she won a ton of games because she trained her players to outwork the opposition. This combined with the talent she was able to recruit allowed her teams to become almost unstoppable. The Lady Vols got by for years on talent and hustle.

I consider Geno Auriemma as more of an innovator of college basketball, on both offense and defense but especially offense. He gets the most out of his players and this is reflected in their dominance the last decade. Holly is not a strong coach when it comes to understanding fundamentals of offense and defense because she never had to master them under Summit. Now many people on here are going to scream at me for saying Pat Summit did not coach at the level of Auriemma and perhaps other coaches who got more out of their players than their talent showed, but it's the truth. There are coaches who can recruit, coaches who can motivate, and coaches who can coach. Holly can do the first. Summit did the first two very well, and Geno does all three. We have the talent this year with DeShields and Russell healthy to get to the Final Four but we will never be a consistent Final Four team until we get someone who can coach, but that's just my opinion.

I heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a friend, who heard it from a player, that there are a couple of UCON assistant coaches who are not happy with Geno.

Perhaps a few of the Holly Haters can get together and hire one of the disaffected UCON coaches and restore Tennessee to greatness.

Are you serious about recruiting? How many recruits does she have for the 2016 class? I'll give you a hint...nada, big fat 0!!! Hope that helps.

Tenacguy,

This recruiting year isn't over yet, but it's obviously not a good start for Holly. In the past however, she has been able to get some big name players (Russell, being able to grab DeShields after her transfer), among others. Time will tell if her recruiting will start to fall off because of the LVols' performance and if her first few years of recruiting were more to the LVols name brand instead of Holly, but for now I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt on recruiting.

So yes I was serious :D but again just my opinion.

This is a cross post from the Elzy thread, but it's just as apt here:

The next coach at Tennessee needs to have had SUCCESSFUL HEAD COACHING EXPERIENCE at his or her last job. No more assistant coaches (Elzy), no broadcasters (Lawson), and not average head coaches (Tyler).

Go for the brass ring like Muffet McGraw who we may not be able to get but would probably be tempted by the upgrade in talent she could get. If we can't get her, go for someone like Wes Moore who has been successfully coaching much less talented players for years.

And, FWIW, I don't consider Kim Mulkey or Tara Vanderveer to be sought after coaches either. Kim reminds me of Holly to a degree in that she underachieves with what she has - just one championship with 5 years with Griner and Sims and 3 years with BOTH of them.

I will also add that I know I am an outsider here, but have been pleasantly surprised by the replies/commentary on this board. Hopefully one day you guys get the same reaction should you ever register at the Boneyard (I know it's a long-shot btw :p). All us UCONN fans are not extremists and some have a neutral self-awareness. We all love sports (specifically WBB), but dialogue is a great thing, and I'm happy to be here. I've felt more welcome than I initially thought. Cheers!

First, thanx for venturing over here and being so polite.
Secondly, I've always wanted to ask a UConn fan this.
From a UConn perspective and what you think most of your fans believe, what do you think are the REAL reasons that Pat canceled the series.
By real, I'm not talking about Maya Moores trip to ESPN.

Ummmmm heck yea I'm all for Kara Lawson... She's well known she played in 3 final fours 2 NC games, A WNBA Champion, WNBA All-Star, she's extremely smart and I think she can get the job done she no nonsense

I would agree. She is very well respected in basketball. She would be great at recruiting and she definitely knows her X's and O's. However the question is would she leave TV to coach?

Thank you. Like I've said before...it's been great to discuss WBB here.

As far as cancelling the series is concerned, I'm no expert nor do I have any inside info to answer the question. IMO it was probably a variety of instances that built up over time. Perhaps the Maya situation was the breaking point.

I will say that when the series was cancelled, I don't think either side really thought we wouldn't play each other anymore. I think both Pat and Geno figured that Tennessee-UCONN would continue to play on a regular basis in the Final Four of the NCAA tourney (at a minimum every few years). I don't think either side thought the Tennessee-UCONN drought would last as long as it currently has.

Like I've said before, Tennessee in the Final Four is a good thing for WBB (especially if it means a Tennessee-UCONN match-up). The viewership for that game (especially after this many years) could really be record-breaking in the sport.

I will end this post with wishing you guys good luck tonight vs Oregon State.

I am a UConn fan with a great deal of respect for the Lady Vols and your proud tradition. i hope the program turns around and gets to the Final Four soon - this would be good for women's basketball.

At the high school I worked at in Wisconsin a few years ago, above the door connecting the wrestling team locker room to the gym, the only inspirational quote the coach has painted on the wall was from Coach Summitt.

Regarding Kara, I admired her as an opponent - the definition of a hard working gritty player.

As to her being a future coach at Tennessee, I have no idea if she would make a successful coach or not. It is one set of skills to be a top notch player, and she certainly would bring that knowledge to the bench if she tried her hand at leading a team. But there are numerous other skills a coach must have and there is no way of knowing for certain that a great player has them or not. (As a Wisconsinite, I am keenly aware that Bart Starr was a great quarterback but one of the worst coaches the Packers ever had.)

Selfishly speaking, I hope Kara stays where she is. She is my favorite television analyst. I suspect she would also do a terrific job as either a play by play announcer or color announcer and hope she is offered that by ESPN soon.

Last, I love visiting Tennessee - I've had some very nice vacations there over the past decade.

Actually, Kara is an excellent color commentator. I get the idea that she would be pretty good at whatever she decided to do, including, but not limited to coaching.

On another thread somebody suggested that Becky Hammond be considered as a coach. The point guard for San Antonio Stars. She was one of the grittiest players I ever watched. Knows the game well and is doing some coaching now. Whether she's ready to take over a program at this time remains to be seen. But I suspect she will someday and do a great job.

Couldn't be any worse than Holly.

Nope. Where has Kara coached? When has she been a head coach? Which team has Kara taken to a Championship? How many players has Kara recruited? Now if she wants to come back be an assistant, fine but not head coach.

Now, I'm all for staying under PHS coaching tree and family, but they have to be qualified or been successful as their current stops, i.e winning Championships.

I think Nikki, LSU coach was my frontrunner after Holly, but her team play and her recruiting has been ugh lately. I think she will do well at Tenn tho, and McCray cos she was an All American here at Tenn, and will push the ladies to be one too. Elzy, cos she gets its, she coached differently than Holly, she is the more direct, more like PHS, than anyone on the coaching staff she talks to players but I don't know if that role changed at Tenn.

Kara head coach. She can be the color analyst. :)

I think that Kara could be an excellent coach one day,but that would be far in the future,I don't know if Kara is even interested in being a coach either,i did a google search and couldn't find anything about her wanting to go into coaching

it would be hard for her start off as a GA, while ESPN will obviously pay her a lot of money as an announcer,if she wan'ts to be a coach,I'd be willing to bet she would be a great one,but does she wan't to coach is the question

and welcome to the board _____ Fan,hmm my keyboard won't type that name for some reason :)
