UConn Fan,
I agree with your posts. Pat Summit brought women's college basketball to the level it is today. She was a great motivator and she won a ton of games because she trained her players to outwork the opposition. This combined with the talent she was able to recruit allowed her teams to become almost unstoppable. The Lady Vols got by for years on talent and hustle.
I consider Geno Auriemma as more of an innovator of college basketball, on both offense and defense but especially offense. He gets the most out of his players and this is reflected in their dominance the last decade. Holly is not a strong coach when it comes to understanding fundamentals of offense and defense because she never had to master them under Summit. Now many people on here are going to scream at me for saying Pat Summit did not coach at the level of Auriemma and perhaps other coaches who got more out of their players than their talent showed, but it's the truth. There are coaches who can recruit, coaches who can motivate, and coaches who can coach. Holly can do the first. Summit did the first two very well, and Geno does all three. We have the talent this year with DeShields and Russell healthy to get to the Final Four but we will never be a consistent Final Four team until we get someone who can coach, but that's just my opinion.
I will also add that I know I am an outsider here, but have been pleasantly surprised by the replies/commentary on this board. Hopefully one day you guys get the same reaction should you ever register at the Boneyard (I know it's a long-shot btw ). All us UCONN fans are not extremists and some have a neutral self-awareness. We all love sports (specifically WBB), but dialogue is a great thing, and I'm happy to be here. I've felt more welcome than I initially thought. Cheers!
First, thanx for venturing over here and being so polite.
Secondly, I've always wanted to ask a UConn fan this.
From a UConn perspective and what you think most of your fans believe, what do you think are the REAL reasons that Pat canceled the series.
By real, I'm not talking about Maya Moores trip to ESPN.
Ummmmm heck yea I'm all for Kara Lawson... She's well known she played in 3 final fours 2 NC games, A WNBA Champion, WNBA All-Star, she's extremely smart and I think she can get the job done she no nonsense

I am a UConn fan with a great deal of respect for the Lady Vols and your proud tradition. i hope the program turns around and gets to the Final Four soon - this would be good for women's basketball.
At the high school I worked at in Wisconsin a few years ago, above the door connecting the wrestling team locker room to the gym, the only inspirational quote the coach has painted on the wall was from Coach Summitt.
Regarding Kara, I admired her as an opponent - the definition of a hard working gritty player.
As to her being a future coach at Tennessee, I have no idea if she would make a successful coach or not. It is one set of skills to be a top notch player, and she certainly would bring that knowledge to the bench if she tried her hand at leading a team. But there are numerous other skills a coach must have and there is no way of knowing for certain that a great player has them or not. (As a Wisconsinite, I am keenly aware that Bart Starr was a great quarterback but one of the worst coaches the Packers ever had.)
Selfishly speaking, I hope Kara stays where she is. She is my favorite television analyst. I suspect she would also do a terrific job as either a play by play announcer or color announcer and hope she is offered that by ESPN soon.
Last, I love visiting Tennessee - I've had some very nice vacations there over the past decade.
On another thread somebody suggested that Becky Hammond be considered as a coach. The point guard for San Antonio Stars. She was one of the grittiest players I ever watched. Knows the game well and is doing some coaching now. Whether she's ready to take over a program at this time remains to be seen. But I suspect she will someday and do a great job.
