Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Are we not past the part of eating our own? Holly and Kellie. Another reason for Kara to not come back but live comfortably coaching a team she has no history to the glory years. Big world of coaches to keep recycling those of the past.
I’m sorry but Parker is just the type of person you take the chance with in my opinion! I don’t care if the lady hasn’t coached a day in her life, she’ll get us what we need…..elite recruits. The life of your program hinges on recruitment, she’s the only person who could probably hit the ground running in that area, without developing any type of long term relationships. She can always surround herself with a great coaching staff to help with Xs and Os, although I have a hard time believing she’ll need a ton of help with that.

Good thing I’m not the AD cause I’d be calling Parker and telling her to retire after this season and come to restore Rocky Top to its rightful place in WCB!!!!!

Sorry I got a little excited about something that’s never going to happen! 😩🥺😂

if recruiting wins then Parker would be a person that could get that done. I think she is really knowledgeable of the game. She may not be a good choice with no coaching experience only playing experience. I do know it has to be a strong recruiter your not going to coach your way to anything without elite players. No one has done it until they loaded up with the top players and not just one or two more like eight or nine.

Many believe NIL wins, so which is it. Strong recruiter or strong money? Seems those with both are successful. But I go back to my stance, we love to eat our own and are at a crossroads of cutting ties with Tennessee legacy tree to move forward or in this case make it potentially a trifecta.

These days it is both. This wasn't the case in the past now you need to be able to offer what anyone else does at least. I am just thinking about recruiting it doesn't matter to me if they are a VFL or a total non Tennessee person. I just find it hard to find people that I think can recruit here that aren't already in a situation where they would be interested. Who you got in mind?

Lets not forget the third factor, actual coaching skill: X's and O's, in-game management and adjustments, training and preparation. If you can't win the big games, the NIL and recruitment opportunities won't really exist.

Parker could bring all that as well as recruiting. I know some coaches that are elite in coaching skills, but I doubt they could recruit a lick at Tennessee or at least not to the level that would be needed to win here. I don't mind taking a chance on any coach that can recruit if they have any viable background in the sport. I'm not hung up on coaching experience cause if you have played for fifteen years you have an extensive knowledge of what you need to do to win. Still recruiting is number one. It made Dawn, Geno, Tara, everyone into elite coaches and that wasn't true their first three four seasons on the job.

Recruiting is number one. Of course you need basketball knowledge Parker has plenty of that and certainly understands how a rotation works in basketball. She has played zone, man to man has an extensive knowledge of both offense and defense. She knows what it takes to develop players. She hasn't coached, but has all the knowledge of a coach from twenty years of playing. I think she brings the recruiting factor in a hurry. I don't know who we could get that could do a better job both recruiting and coaching that would come here.

I love Candace and I think she'd be a fantastic recruiter and would love to coax her into coaching. But look at what happened with Sheryl Swoopes--being a good player does not necessarily translate to having good coaching skill (though she's a bit of an extreme example). Kellie herself won multiple championships playing for UT and yet has a much lower tournament ceiling as a head coach.

I mentioned Becky Hammon earlier and still think she could be wooed into the NCAA. It's out there, yeah, but here's my argument.

The hard part with Becky was getting her into coaching women's basketball at all. Now that she's in the W, it's less of a stretch to come over to NCAAW. We'd have to throw several million at her and the university would need to offer the sun and moon, but she is way more approachable now as a potential head coach than back when she was with the Spurs. Would she be interested in coaching at Tennessee specifically is a different question entirely, but we do know she could recruit, win, and get the money flowing.

Edit, multiple days later: I meant Tina Thompson, not Sheryl Swoopes! Lol my bad

I don't see her coming to Tennessee, but yes she is a great candidate. All in all there are a lot of great coaches out there and recruiting the top players makes them that way. Dawn is a good coach, but she didn't win nothing big until she got that recruiting hotline going there at SC. It took her until the fifth season to make it happen now she has all recruits on the radar just like Pat did at Tennessee. That is what has to happen at any school to become elite in any sport. The best players make you the best coach. If we have to make a change it better be someone that can get players in here or we'll see more of what were seeing now.

My first call for recruiting only is Jolette Law, her current base plus coach out the door on our staff. If she needs a title to seal it up, give her a title.

She did the job here and is doing it there so yes but no she left here because she is from SC. I guess the right amount of money would make her interested in Tennessee again.

Making 300K currently, if we want to get serious you get what you pay for. That’s why I stated 300K plus outgoing Coach….let’s say Jon who’s making 170K. Now she’s 470K and we get ROI with players.

Well you have to either hire her as coach or hire another coach and then hire her. You can't believe you can fire Jon and keep Kellie doubt that would be an option. So I guess you could hire a coach like the one at Utah who can't get the big recruits , but the ones she does get play harder and smarter than any team I have seen this season. They are just not that talented.

We are operating on a low budget in regards to the staff. Part of that is market value for the coach from HC down the bench. We get what we pay for.

I'm sure we could hire anyone we wanted to. Our revenue is totally more than SC, UConn, and most schools. We've chosen to go cheap in women's basketball cause it is a sport that is dependent on other sources of revenue. We could go get the best recruiter in basketball. We could offer the top NIL deals to women's players. It is not the priority and guess we'll learn exactly where the sport of women's basketball lands in the next couple of years.

parker is finishing her career in WNBA and already is working for TNT and NBA tv to jobs she seems to love and enjoy. No chance she comes here and coaches plus she just adopted a child to raise

I wouldn’t say it’s not the priority, here it’s just not reaping results to matter. We went cheap because of Fulmer seeking influence by in-house personnel saying it needed to be a legacy. We are falling behind with a separate NIL for LV because of the lack of direction and support by donors already giving. So we have a divided athletic department again.

You can never speak for a person until they are offered a job and turn it down. You can be a basketball coach and raise a child just like you can play in the WNBA and raise a child. Harper is raising two and coaching. I agree it would be something she probably wouldn't be interested in, but you never know until you ask and they say no.

Were losing two million a year on women's basketball. SC and UConn is up over five million a year. So we could add three million to the budget and get just about any coach out there excepting the ones that have been at their school for thirty years. The next hire probably needs to be a proven person and it will take that three million that others are willing to pay to get it done here like they are getting it done. The question is who are the candidates most aren't doing any better than Harper just playing easier schedules. The ones that are have been at their schools for decades.

If we're going in the family criteria how about Tamika Catchings should could recruit just as well as Parker and both have ZERO coaching experience in the college game
I am for anyone that can recruit. They don't have to be a VFL they can be anybody. We need to get the players in here and anyone that can do that is fine with me.

Gee, I missed the announcement that Tennessee is looking for a new women's coach. Seems like that development would have gotten more media.

Searching, searching, nope, nope, nope. How strange. Oh, well, so I take it from this thread that Candace and Tamika will be co-coaching the team? Big (secret) news day for sure. Dang Kellie is gonna be shocked.

I don't like the way it is set up for women's sports. A separate one for women's basketball would be what would draw the most interest. If fans knew they were contributing only to women's basketball or even softball and basketball it would be easier to get the donations going. I don't care much about a rowing team. golf, etc. If they are getting an equal share of the money then it is hurting our chances to get better players for basketball and softball.
