Indianas decision not to sign a new contract to play Kentucky in mens basketball likely wont have any impact on extending the North Carolina-UK series, UNC senior associate athletics director Larry Gallo said Thursday.
At least, not in the immediate future.
We havent talked in a while, Gallo said of the schools, so right now, there is no intent to play in 2012-13.
The Tar Heels and Wildcats have faced off in each of the past 12 seasons, usually signing two-year contracts for home-and-home series. But the schools did not renew the deal after last season, citing in December the likely expansion of the ACC and SEC conference schedules, and the number of other big-name series UK, in particular, was already playing (Indiana, included).
Gallo said UNC would still like to consider signing another home-and-home deal with the Wildcats in the future, but right now, it doesnt look like thats going to happen.
Kentucky athletics director Mitch Barnhart seemed to agree Thursday. According to this story from Kyle Tucker of the Louisville Courier-Journal, Tucker was asked if he was confident the UNC-UK series would continue.
I wouldnt say that for sure,'' he said. "Like I said, were working our way through it.
Asked if the series was over, Barnhart responded:
Id say that right now thats probably closer to being true than not, but well see. Were picking up, like I said, were working our way through the schedule stuff right now.
The Tar Heels schedule is pretty much complete for next season, Gallo said.
