Kentucky safety in horrific crash

If a random story about a UK football player barely surviving a freak accident because he wasn't wearing his seat belt persuades a person to consciously avoid wearing their seat belt, then they have MUCH bigger problems than a seatbelt dilemma.

I don't think this story will convince someone to stop wearing a seat belt, but I do think there are people out there who choose not to wear one, and this story certainly isn't going to convince them to wear one.

My cousin died when he was 19(I was 15) from being ejected from his car. He wasn't wearing his seat belt.

A friend died from a rollover accident when he was 22. Also not wearing a seat belt.

Thats terrible.
And I also assume you didn't tell the friends and family around them that you didn't feel bad for them because they weren't wearing a seat belt.
Like, too bad ms. smith, he should've worn a belt and its his fault so I don't feel bad that he's dead, and you shouldn't either.

thrown 100 feet away. That's incredible. I can't imagine. Do you think he remembers being in the air? How long do you think you would be in the air? Even if he was only thrown half that far and rolled the rest, that's still such a long way to be thrown. I wonder how high off the ground he was at the height of being thrown as well. That's simply amazing that he's conscious enough to crack jokes, answer questions, talk with family/friends.

Either he or the car could have rolled most of that distance. Not necessary for him to have been in the air much.

This (thread) is the time and place to practice tact and compassion.

Plenty of space to debate your opinions on seatbelts elsewhere.

I would agree, IF I thought he or someone who knows him personally is likely to read this thread.

But since I think that unlikely, I don't see the problem with discussing vehicle safety in a thread about an accident (excluding the "I don't feel sorry" comment).

How long does one have to wait after the accident before it is OK to mention seat belts? A week? A month? A year?

Reports that he is walking around his hospital room today.

Most amazing is that there are no broken bones. Lots of cuts tho.

My sympathies go out to this young man and his family. I hope he manages to fully recover, and that this teaches him to be more careful in the future.

@Yankee Vol. You give UT fans and US service members a bad name, and I already have a very low opinion on the life worth of the latter group as is.

I disagree, Yankee Vol has a right to state his opinion. I am a Vol fan and I feel your comments and treatment of Yankee gives us a bad name.

Sorry I don't feel bad for people who bring things upon themselves

You and the one like you got are both jerks.

I guess that you have NEVER, EVER done something that could result in harm...

Instead of dropping in and dispensing punk justice, you could have just not posted anything at all.

I wish dude the best. The seatbelt argument has nothing to do with wishing him well.

Because we should all be perfect like you and never make a mistake or make a "bad choice. I try to refrain from personal attacks but your comments are full of stupid. We all have consequences for our actions but for most people compassion is not limited to only the so called "innocent".

This past year a guy at my high school that was a senior this year (I graduated in 2012 so I did see him some even though he was a year younger than me) died in a car crash in March. I'm sure some of you saying "well he brought it upon himself" wouldn't say that if you actually knew the person. Stop being heartless idiots and wish the kid well. We all make mistakes in our life and this kid not wearing his seatbelt was one of them but he's alive.

...and in not-surprising news, he has been charged with DUI. Why else would you flip your car multiple times at 4 AM?

Not really. When I was a young and dumb teenager I was thrown from a car wreck not wearing a seat belt from a car that rolled multiple times. The only injury I got was from crawling thru a barbed wire fence to check on my buddy who was driving. He ended up in a coma for a month with brain damage.

Needless to say the seat belt is the first thing I reach for when getting in any vehicle.

Prayers to the Cat and his people.
